Re: persimmon

mims--welcome to the forum!

yes--I have planted persimmon trees but have yet to see any "fruits of my labor" as the trees are only 2 years old. I collected the seeds from ripe persimmons in the winter---cleaned them real well then put them in the fridge in a plastic baggy with a damp paper towel. I left them in the fridge for 2 months. I then made a little "scar" or "nick" on the side of the seed. I planted in little styofoam planters with a 1/2 peat moss--1/2 potting soil mixture. They germinated in 4 to 6 weeks. After germination I replanted in a 1/2 gallon pot with a mixture of potting soil and top soil. I transplanted them on my land the following fall. I had about a 90% germination rate from the seeds which I though was pretty darn good.

You can also buy 2 year old trees from various internet nurseries.

Like texan said persimmons can take up to 7 years to produce fruit. Most persimmons trees are either male or female and only the female trees produce fruit.

Deer LOVE ripe persimmons!

Re: persimmon

There are some persimmon trees around here. Have a few on our property, they flower, but never bear any fruit. I have heard that after the first good frost that deer will wear the persimmons out.

Another fruit they love is pears. We have pear trees in the yard, the deer seem to like them best right when they start to get a little soft.

Re: persimmon

Thanks for all the info. I am looking longterm so if it takes a few or seven years to produce thats fine. I live near myrtle beach sc so i dont know how that will affect growing time. I am planning on buying a couple of pear trees also(2 year old or so),Thee deer here are so small they need all the nourishment they can get, The 120 pound 8 point I harvested is proof of that. Again thanks

Re: persimmon

Really might want to consider some kiefer or bartlett pears. A couple small pear trees from a local nursery in a 3-5 gallon size will run you around $10-15. They will produce the first year, they grow incredibly fast and produce a lot of fruit.

With whatever you plant, use a wire cage until the trees are fairly good sized. I made the mistake with a couple pear trees of not using one and the deer rubbed them so bad the trees broke off near the ground.
