RMS
I'm heading to Pike Co. for the second firearms Dec 1-4. How has the rut been so far and do you Illinois hunters think the bucks will still be moving well. Up here in MN I would say there will be some great late or post rut action yet but just wondering how its been down there?
ilhnter
Re: Illinois - Pike County Down in Southern Illinois where I hunt, i can't say the rut has been that great. Its been really weird, the bucks are only checking scrapes about once a week, very few rubs, and i haven't seen a big buck chasing a doe yet. I have seen tons and tons of smaller bucks such as spikes and four pointers chasing does like crazy. But its really weird, one day bucks will be chasing and the next they have no interest what so ever in does. I don't know, hopefully this cooler weather for opening gun season will get them up and moving a little bit more.
MUDRUNNER
Re: Illinois - Pike County Pike county is a great place to hunt any time during the season.Lotsa monsters running around there. It's hard to say what the second shotgun season will be like.I think most of the does will have been bred, but there will still be a some does that were not bred coming into estrous. 6sixpoint_nobrows
Re: Illinois - Pike County you will be catching the very end of the rut bud....the bucks are moving hard now, and some doe's are starten to get bread....it should still be good....good luck~! pike county is the number two place in the world to hunt giant white-tails..good luck, and be sure to post pics of what you get
brownie65
Re: Illinois - Pike County Rut has been going pretty good since last weekend. Second shotgun season you should see some activity. Secondary rut should be going. You never know, some parts they won't be doing anything & a mile away they can be chasing hard. I usually have the best luck if I hunt some big timber during the second season. Bucks seem to be chasing better in these secluded areas. Along the bluffs, somewhere where there is lots of continous timber(which you won't find many great big blocks around here).I'm talking something like 40 acres or so of big mature timber with lots of ridges & valleys, if that makes any sense. KansasDeer
Re: Illinois - Pike County try rattling too...some people say this is the best time because you have the bucks looking for the last does to breed
