QUESTION ON RIFLE CARTRIDGES

Hello everyone. I am planning an antelope hunt in Wyoming. I understand that I may need to shoot as far as 250-300 yards possibly. I am planning to use my Rem. 7400 in .270. I have a Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x40 mounted on it. I have used Rem. Core-Lokt 150 grn. Soft Pt. for many years, but I'm sure that there are much better shells out there I should use for the hunt. Any opinions on what make and grain might be the best for me ? For a semi-auto, my gun is quite accurate, 1"-1-1/2" at 100 yards. I have it sighted in at dead on at 100 yards right now. Any idea on how much I should adjust my poi at 100 yards ?

Thanks alot.

Mike

Re: QUESTION ON RIFLE CARTRIDGES

For long range shooting with the 270, I would look for the highest BC I could find in a 130 grain bullet. The 130 will give you a slight edge in drop and the high BC of a Boat Tail Spitzer will also help both with drop and wind drift. I would recomend something like the Nosler Accubond or Swift Sirocco. Finaly Practice, Practice, Practice!!! and then you are set. grin.gif

Re: QUESTION ON RIFLE CARTRIDGES

It sounds like your setup is just fine. You c an try some 130 grain bullets too see if they shoot any better, but either one will work just fine. Comparing Remington's 130 gr Scirocco load vs 150 Core Lokt when both are sighted in 2" high at 100 yards, compares like this:

(130 gr) [150 gr]

100 yards = (+2") [+2"]

150 yards = (+2.2") [+1.8"]

200 yards = (+1.2") [0]

250 yards = (-1") [-3.7"]

275 yards = (-2.6") [-6.3"]

300 yards = (-4.5") [-9.5"]

325 yards = (-7") [-13"]

350 yards = (-9.5") [-17.5"]

375 yards = (-12.5") [-22.5"]

400 yards = (-16") [-28"]

These numbers are close but not exact. Your semi auto will rob a little velocity from the bullet and will increase the drop slightly but the difference should still be close. If you have a rangefinder, it will make shooting easier as you can laze the target, look at a chart and shoot the pronghorn. I suggest you zero 2" high at 100 yards and shoot a group at 250 and 300 to verify the drop. With that info, you can make a chart and tape it to your stock for quick reference.

Re: QUESTION ON RIFLE CARTRIDGES

since your looking at antelope i would think maybe an accubond or ballsitic tip boattail bullet. in 270 a good 130 grain i believe would be the new accubond form nosler and i would look at the federal ammo or black hills and see if they have the accubond

i am getting ready to shoot my 308 in the 150 accubond and they are similar the ballistic tips but are bonded so they should do the same job for you. i am not a remington fan when it comes to ammo but i know a lot of people who live by them. i think their quality lacks a lot and i worry about poor tolerances but you never know. i got spoiled when it came to nosler ammo or bullets and they seem to be the best. i am also a big fan of a boat tail ammo. i think the boattail improves the accuracy of the bullet

i also like to make my 100 yard group be 3 inches high and 1200 hours so i am sitting some where in the 250 yard range and that makes it easier if i have to shoot out beyond 250 yards i know i will hit my target
