Re: are rattlesnakes poisonous?

I used to hunt mulies out in the sage country around Craig,CO and since it was late August I asked a lady in a museum there about the rattlesnakes. She told me you could probably make it back to town unless you were bitten on the artery on the inside of your leg or your neck then it's a done deal.

Re: are rattlesnakes poisonous?

Rattlesnakes are listed as a pit viper and are VERY poisonous. There are several subspecies throughout North America, with the most common being the Diamond Back(Western & Eastern). If bitten you WILL need immediate medical attention....I know, as I have been bit in the past. Several people die each year after being bitten by them. I can tell you even if you survive (which is probable if immediate medical treatment is sought) you'll wish you were dead during the entire ordeal. Be aware of your surroundings and stay clear when you encounter.

Re: are rattlesnakes poisonous?

Do you have the type that are kinda pink colored? (quit laughing, I'm serious). We killed one about 16 inches long in Utah that was pink. Looked like he would just as soon bite ya as look at ya.

BTW - This will be the first weekend this year I get to hunt without snake boots! We finally got some cold weather and hopefully all of the snakes have denned up for the winter.

JoeBob......our team mascot happens to be a Rattler....we've got tons of them here......yes they are venomous, and yes you can possibly die from them, but the most common and dangerous thing that might happen would be to loose circulation to hands, feet etc...due to the swelling.....which could then require amputation if medical attnetion can't be had immediately.......prairie rattlers are not known to be extrememly deadly, but they are extremnely dangerous and should not be messed with.......unless you are a bonehead like me, and like to catch them and skin/tan their hides....LOL

Re: are rattlesnakes poisonous?

Honestly depends on what the snake you are calling a rattlesnake really is. No offense but that kind of question leads me to believe you don't know a whole bunch about rattlers. I assure you, you're not alone on that issue.

I have seen lots of snakes people killed swearing they were rattlers, copperheads, moccasins, etc. they called me to look at them afterward. As a result, I've seen an awful lot of dead quite harmless garter snakes, rat snakes, hognose, and plain belly water snakes.

As mentioned by others above in this post ND has Prairie rattlers and they are indeed venomous.

Do yourself a favor and read up on them here.

Re: are rattlesnakes poisonous?

If bitten you could die, yes. You can also lose tissue and possibly a limb or appendage. I have seen pictures of the results of rattlesnake bites. It AIN'T pretty.

I was told a story of what happened to a little boy about 45 years ago. This little boy was fishing in a creek along side a dirt road. A sheriff's deputy pulled up beside him and asked him if he was having any luck. The boy held up his stringer. It was LOADED with fish. But the boy said he was having trouble with his bait. The deputy asked what kind of trouble. The little boy said his "worms" kept biting him. This caused concern to the deputy and he got out of his car. He picked up the coffee can the boy was holding his "worms" in. Turns out the "worms" were tiny baby pygmy rattlers.

He scooped that little boy up and put him in his patrol car.

That little boy died before they got into town. Turns out he'd been bitten repeatedly on his fingers and hands by his fishing bait. frown.giffrown.giffrown.gif

Needless to say................we kill rattle snakes around here. Moccasins too.
