Atlanta, Georgia Jan. 4-9th..... I was wondering if anyone in this area knows of any decent waterfowl hunting around this vacinity or could get me on some birds for one or two mornings... I will be down there for ATA but would love to get some southern waterfowling in... I would post this in the waterfowl room but not enough people get in there from time to time... any help or suggestion would be great! Thanks! grin.giftongue.gif

I live 20 minutes east of Atlanta and I've never heard of any waterfowling around here. To wager a guess, I'd say it'll be at least 2 hours from Atlanta, maybe towards Savanah or some other point south. Maybe DSGB or Scott can help out more, they are from Columbus.

WFG,

I just looked up your profile and I am befuddled why you don't have a littany of marriage proposals while you are here let alone hunting offers! wink.gif

I would offer to let you hunt with me for some JAW-JA whitetail but I don't think my wife would approve. Oh what the heck, she stays mad at me anyhow so why not give her a really good reason. laugh.gif

On those dates, nothing except hogs are going to be in season unless you hunt whitetails in one of the major metro counties like I do. That season has been extended until Feb 28th.

If you have the dough, you could probably google search for a hog hunting plantation where you could lay one down.

As for waterfowl, I don't know of anywhere close to the city where you could go hunt. If you like to shoot skeet and trap, you could try the Wolf Creek range--it is where the Olympic events were held. Funny story, I took my new Beretta over/under down there to shoot skeet (after an NRA fun shoot gave me the bug) and knew nothing about skeet. The guy asked me whether I wanted American or International. I dunno, let's try International. I had the standard choke tube that came with the gun...I think full and modified. WOW is all I can say. I was shooting with one other guy that was shooting a $20,000+ Franchi and was apparently a pro. He hit all but one target. I yelled pull the first time and then looked at the microphone as if 'did you hear me?'--it was an automated system. I think two of those skeet actually broke the sound barrier! I managed to shoot 6 or 7 out of the sky which I thought was great given it was my first time shooting the gun, with non-skeet tubes, shooting International.

Good luck,

Re: Atlanta, Georgia Jan. 4-9th.....

I am not aware of any waterfowling opportunities near Atlanta. Most of the people I know who duck hunt travel to the Savannah area, which is an approximately 4-hour drive from Atlanta. Quota hunts are offered on a WMA at Lake Oconee (90 min. east), but the application deadline passed last month.

Quail and possibly hogs may be hunted fairly close to Atlanta on private properties (paid hunts). Otherwise, WMA's near Cartersville and Dallas offer small game hunting. Each of those areas is approximately 50 miles outside Atlanta. That's a long way to go to shoot a squirrel.

Atlanta has enough to keep you busy for a few days. The new aquarium will open in the coming weeks. Depending upon your interests, visit theaters and a museum in mid-town, shops and restaurants in Underground Atlanta (take a taxi, go during the day - stay away from the street level at night), or search the internet for comedy club acts and concerts. The World of Coke is a tourist trap that is supposedly a "must see." It is located at Underground Atlanta.

If you are a hockey fan, the Penguins are in town on Friday night (Jan. 6). The game will be played at Phillips Arena, which is attached to CNN Center, or down the street from the GA World Congress Center.

May I suggest local restaurants for lunch rather than those in hotels or CNN Center. When I'm in the neighborhood, I usually eat at Max Lager's (Peachtree & W. Peachtree) or Mick's (International Blvd & Courtland?). Planet Hollywood, Hard Rock Cafe and a Hooters are located at Peachtree & International Blvd. Those are the same as any others in their respective chains. Many other restaurants are located in that general area as well. Consider Veni Vidi Vici or Ray's for dinner.

For nightlife, the Virginia Highlands and Buckhead are the most popular areas. Buckhead has several restaurants as well (I highly recommend the Cheescake Factory), but that area becomes congested with Georgia Tech students and troublemakers later at night.

Enjoy your time in Atlanta.

Easy big fellah, Slugshooter, we can talk about this. laugh.gif

WF girl, here is what you need to do whilst in Atlanta:

First, when in Atlanta, you need...no MUST go eat at the Varsity. Greasy hamburgers and hotdogs and tradition. A must.

Once you digest that, a great restaurant chain is called Houstons. Try the pork chops that are about 3" thick, oh they are good. They cook over wood and I have to smell that going home each night. Yummm.

Beyond that, there really isn't much to see or do really. I don't do the urban life thing but there is the Fox theatre or you can go to underground and see what it is like to be a duck and get hunted. You might really like Stone Mountain. The Zoo is pretty good and we have the High Museum of Art. If you like history and especially Egyptian stuff, there is the Carlos Museum that has a lot of that stuff.

Don't get too crazy as it is easy to get yourself in trouble downtown, especially in Buckhead's bar district. Lots of shootings down there. If you like Country music and line dancing type thing, Cowboy Bill's out at Gwinnett Place mall is huge.

Good luck,

New

No harm done Newarcher, just holding my ground. grin.gifgrin.gif

I can't believe you are sending her to the Varsity, the last I heard they had a roach problem, of course, that was over 10 years ago, probably got it taken care of by now. confused.gif It's been awhile since I have spent any "quality" time in "Hot-Lanta", just when I was driving a truck and parked at the company terminal near the airport, there's a good Waffle House nearby there. smirk.gif

I went to Underground Atlanta a long time ago, I'm sure it's changed a little bit but it was neat nonetheless, she could always go to the World of Coca-Cola if thats her thing. As far as anything else, I couldn't be much help.

I know she mentioned Quail hunting, the only place I know in Georgia thats real good for that is the plantation in South Georgia, although the name eacapes me. Oh well.
