Re: any one get any thing in newyork opener

Well this morning I saw 5 squirrels, 1 fox, and 6 hunters from my stand! I was so mad with the the guys around, normally never that many and some may have been there that shouldn't have been. Tonight from a different stand I saw probably 5 more squirrels and 3 more hunters. I don't think anyone got a deer on the land we hunt. Hopefully tomorrow that will change! Good luck everyone!

Re: any one get any thing in newyork opener

Got the update from my dad this morning, not sure about the afternoon hunt..

My dad had a doe walk by early, no doe tags so she walked, then about a half hour later, a buck was hot on her trail.. He was in some thick brush so no shot, then about 10 minutes later, my dad's friend took a pop at him and missed, he ran up the hill where another guy was and that other guy missed as well. Incredible. Turns out the buck is a nice sized 6pt. Everyone up there is looking for either a buck or a coyote.

It would be interesting if you guys would include your WMU or some other location info when you report your observations. It's hard to relate to what your seeing when there's no idea what corner of the state you're talking about.

Just a suggestion.

Re: any one get any thing in newyork opener

The Saturday opener was no different for me. I actually saw less people than I normally do.

I did see about 40 deer on opening day here in 7M. I could have killed about 20 does if they allowed doe permits in my DMU. I let a spike horn pass my watch and grazed a little belly hair off a rack buck. I will see him again later this week I hope.

Tons of deer and less people. That's the report from my neck of the woods.

Re: any one get any thing in newyork opener

Overall, things were pretty uneventful around here Saturday in 8P/8R. I didn't see a thing and left the woods around 9:00 after counting shot #400. It was a little better in 8W...my cousin got a decent 2.5 yr. old 8-pt. and one of my uncles missed a big one and saw 3 other shooters that were outta range. Everyone else that hunted there saw several small bucks and 20-30 does....unfortunately no one got any doe permits for that WMU.

Yesterday the action was better here in 8P/8R. We pushed around some deer including several nice bucks while doing small drives . My uncle and another guy missed an absolute monster. Another one of my uncle's had him standing broadside at 30 yds. and couldn't shoot due to safety reasons crazy.gif. Needless to say he was sick over it. He said it was a wide 10-pt. with really long tines and lots of mass...definately a state record buck qualifier. To top it all off...the buck was bedded with four does not 100 yds. from one of my stands when we jumped him. I sure wish they coulda put that big boy on the ground but he's still out there. Yet another one of my uncles saw a giant buck trailing a doe out in his father-in-laws field yesterday morning. They put on a small drive and one of his brother-in-laws hit the buck. They looked for 3 hours and only found a single drop of blood. Hopefully, he's still alive. My uncle said that the 140 class 8-pt. that he killed there last year could have fit inside this one. Oh...the ones that get away! I have heard of several big ones being taken in the area (and lots more being missed) including a 150" 12-pt. Things will be alot better when we get some snow. Overall, the hunting seems to be a bit better than it was last year.

Well, my cousin's husband ended up getting the buck that I wanted Sat. evening...the big 7-pt. that I've been watching since early June. He's not the biggest in the area but is a decent 3.5 yr. old with an 18" inside spread. The tip of his beam and browtine are broken on one side and his other browtine is chipped too. Oh well, at least one of the weekend warriors didn't end up getting him. Interestingly, this buck came in to investigate the "Primos can" call. Last night he was out trying to fill a doe permit and coulda shot another big buck. Not the most tasteful pics. but here's a couple of the big 7-pt.

Good luck everyone cool.gif!

Shot a doe yesterday afternoon on a little one man push. Good big doe (6R). 15 does came out on this drive, not a buck with them. I have seen a few small bucks but nothing great. So far, what I know, there have been 10 bucks killed in our area. Saturday I heard more shots than I ever have and now they are coming from riffles. Oh and I shot a coyote Sunday morning.
