Bond
I drove by one of our fields and saw an eagle and a hawk on a dead opossum so took my cam out of the woods, got the settings tweaked for close pictures and hear are the results: I never saw the eagle again once I drove by, they're easier to scare than hawks, so that's all I got were hawks. Bond
Re: Finally got Hawk pics with my homemade trail c Are you sure it's a rough legged hawk, Tominator? I thought it was a red tail just in a different phase... I didn't think we had rough legged hawks here either.

Look at his tail in the one close up, and look at his rump in the one where he's flying away. Also, a red tail has more "skin" showing on the lower leg. A rough legged hawk's whole leg is covered with feathers, thus the name. And, shouldn't a red tail hawk, have a red tail? Your hawk has a white tail, just like a rough legged, lol. sasksheds
Re: Finally got Hawk pics with my homemade trail c As soon as I saw them I thought they were Red Tail Hawks. When we were kids here in Sask. my freinds brother raised 3 from chicks. They are awsome looking birds. We use to trap gophers for them.We would climb to the top of the old combine where they lived & wave the dead gophers & down they would come for lunch!Wish we had digital cameras back then! [/ QUOTE ] You have them. Apparently, so does Ohio. They must be fairly rare, or I mistook them for an immature red tail. they do resemble a juvenile redtail. Now this is getting frustrating, I just take the pictures, I shouldn't be liable to identify them. lol [/ QUOTE ] LOL, sometimes I think y'all are just stringing me along, teasing. I promise you, your pictures are a rough legged hawk, not a red tail. Red tail site Here's a good red tail site that compares juveniles to adults. Look at the tail first of all. red tails have a red tail, or dark if they're juvenile. Your bird has a white tail underneath and white rump. Look at the beak. A juvenile red tail has no yellow on it, yours does. Finally, the breast of a red tail juvenile is pretty streaked with brown, but doesn't have the heavy brown feathers on the bottom like yours does. Your pictures are of a rough legged hawk. I'm positive.
Tominator
Re: Finally got Hawk pics with my homemade trail c Juvenile red tail. And another. Adult red tail. Look at the foot. Feathers stop at the "knee." Now look at your bird's legs, feathers go all the way to the ankle.
