Guest lilcrackshot
I am in the process of getting my first handgun for hunting. I was thinking either 44 mag or 45 in a ruger. What do you think?
JimT
Re: First Hunting Handgun One of the guns I wish I never got rid of was my Rugar .44 mag SB. What a good shooting pistol. I would say set one up and go with it.

WaCoyote
Re: First Hunting Handgun .44 for sure. That will take care of anything out there and there are a lot of good loads to choose from. Also if you handload you can really come up with some wicked loads. Have fun. wyote
Re: First Hunting Handgun If you don't hand load the 44 is probably better. I prefer the 45 colt.
hangunnr
Re: First Hunting Handgun I too recommend the .44mag as the caliber to have. There are a plethora of factory loads available. As stated above, you can make some really smoking reloads if you're so inclined. As far as which gun to have..... I personally like the Smith&Wesson revolvers but you can't go wrong if you have a Ruger single action or double action. You might take a look at the Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter series. They, like the double action revolvers are ready to have optics installed using Rugers integral scope ring mounts. Keep in mind there isn't really any time you'd need a double action hunting gun as you'll never likely squeeze off multiple shots while in the field. hangunnr
Guest TCScout
Re: First Hunting Handgun Unless you have decided for a revolver, you might want to consider a single-shot like a Contender G2 or Encore. They are available in the calibers you have listed and you can get other barrels later on if you want to stretch it out a little bit.
