body size

Been watching a little 4 pointer here lately with a lot of potential, good width and length and very symetrical. Thing is he is really small in the body. I have seen a button buck this year that was just as big in th ebody, if not bigger. Was thinking maybe he was a really late born 1 1/2 year old, but he is really thin in the body. Anyone have any ideas or and explanation as to how a 1 1/2 year old could be so small in comparison to a fawn?

Re: body size

Late born fawns tend to be behind the eight ball when it comes to body size. They have less time to nurse and put on weight before their first winter...Studies show that these deer do catch up if given the chance to reach maturity. See what he looks like in two years, then make your harvest decision. I would bet that he will be a good deer!

Hummm, my guess would be either screwed up genetics or some type of disease or parasites. If the other deer in the area are healthy, I'd tend to rule out nutrition.

Yep, nutrition is there, and his antlers looked to have great potential. This deer was perfectly healthy, just considerably smaller in the body than what we would normally see in a 1 1/2 year old. As a 4 point, he was probably 12-13 inches wide, and had decent length to the forks for a 4 pointer.

Re: body size

I saw a 2 1/2 year old 8 point trailing a doe towards what i figured to be the end of the rut.......the doe was much bigger, and i thought that perhaps it was just the rut taking its toll on the buck. I know that the stresses during this time can really do a number on the bodyweight of a deer

Re: body size

On our land in northern N.Y. our dee size has droped and we don't know why. We see very few does over 100 - 110 this year shaving 20 pounds from last year and I shot a nice 8pt. that was 2 1/2 years old weighing 137 shaving 30 pounds from last year. Everywhere around us has great food plots and last winter was very easy on our herd. Our neighbors harvested 2 3 1/2 year old bucks this year dressing at 215 and 142 both with very large racks. Any ideas?
