Ever See An Iceberg From Top To Bottom...

I got this in an E-Mail today and I thought this was pretty awesome and thought I would share it with yall...

This came from a Rig Manager for Global Marine Drilling

in St. Johns, Newfoundland.

They actually have to divert the path of these things

away from the rig by towing them with ships!

Anyway, in this particular case the water was calm and

the sun was almost directly overhead

so that the diver was able to get into the water

and click this pic. Clear water huh?!

They estimated the weight at 300,000,000 tons.

This may not be an actual picture of a real icegerg, but it isn't far fetched as far as how much ice lies under the water as compared to what you see sticking out, above the water.

[ QUOTE ]

How much of an iceberg is below water?

The "tip of the iceberg" expression can be explained as follows: Icebergs float because the density of ice (around 900 kg per cubic meter) is lower than that of seawater (around 1025 kg per cubic meter). The ratio of these densities tells us that 7/8 of the iceberg's mass must be below water. Usually icebergs are 20% to 30% longer under the water than above and not quite as deep as they are long at the waterline.

I knew it had to be a fake after reading the part about the sun being directly overhead in Newfoundland. I actually did pay attention to this in Science this year... The only way the sun could be directly over head of you is if you are at the equator. Only way. Has to do with the degree of the arc of the suns path across the sky. wink.gif
