Guest bigbucks125
hello everyone...im just curious to know how many of you are trophy buck hunters? and how many little bucks did you take before you started waiting for Mr. BIG? i've killed quite a few little bucks and i find myself passing the little 4 pointers and waiting for a nicer more mature buck. SaskMan
Re: trophy buck hunters I will confess to being a trophy hunter. I hunted for about 8 years before I seriously began holding out. It takes alot of determination to hang nto that tag when you are seeing "nice" bucks. Every time you pass up a good buck the easier it becomes. With that said, you definately need some bucks under your belt first.
mathews4life
Re: trophy buck hunters well i would say i'm on the verge of becoming one. i'm only 20 yrs old and i have 29 deer killed most of them being bucks w/ one of them scoring 147" which i killed last yr. After killing him its a lot easeir to pass on smaller bucks, but it also depends where i'm hunting. I hunt 3 different leases and each one has a different "trophy" status. I think by the time i get a lil older i'll truly be a trophy hunter bc i know what managing a heard can do.
maddhunter
Re: trophy buck hunters I've been holding on smaller bucks for about 4yrs now, but did get a little excited when I seen a decent buck this rifle season with my kids When I'm hunting bymyself though I have no problem letting them grow. But ofcourse a "Wallhanger" in my books is a 120 class deer.
Saskbuck40
Re: trophy buck hunters Yeah, im 18, and have taken 6 deer. (4 whitetails and 2 muleys) I usually hold out on whitetails at about 150". All my whitetails that i have shot have been between 152" and 171" gross. In my area its not uncommon to see at least a 145 class deer in a full day of hunting; mainly because the majority of hunters have the same goals as myself. Its pretty neat and I am quite grateful I live where I live. Northern Saskatchewan rocks.
HuntingInMaine
Re: trophy buck hunters I am a trophy hunter for the first 3 weeks of hunting season. Since they have now past, I'm a meat hunter. We need it for the winter, so I don't have the luxury of being picky any longer....I have let three does walk this year and am now wondering if I shouldn't have taken one of them....it's a very slow season for everyone in Maine.... vagobbln
Re: trophy buck hunters It's a big deer or bust with me. Once I got a nice one under my belt 20 or so years ago, that's all I've hunted for. Doesn't bother me one bit to have to eat a tag at the end of the year. Wish it was that way with a few more people around here. Many act like it's some sort of insult to their manhood not to kill something every year. Typically, it's the same people who ***** about not seeing anything but little bucks. Hey, I may go the rest of my life without killing another trophy deer, but that's OK. I'm richer for all the experiences I had while trying.

Tominator
Re: trophy buck hunters Did Ohiobucks put you up to this? LOL. I'm going to get hacked on, but here goes: And I'll start with saying that I'm a bowhunter 99.9% of the time. Yep, when it comes to bucks, I'm a trophy hunter. This year I shot a deer that might score around 120", and is not typically what I would call a trophy, but when I saw him, I knew I wanted him, so I shot him. Any doe that walks in front of me is going to get shot at, but no doe has walked in front of me in over a year. In a normal year I'll have a doe in the freezer by mid October so that I can concentrate on bucks that would qualify for Pope & Young. I'm looking forward to a "normal" year here any day now. Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: trophy buck hunters I've passed up 2, 140 class 10 points and several others in the 130's this year so I guess you could call me a trophy hunter. It wasn't a sudden decision on my part, more of a gradual shift over the past 35+ years of my hunting career. The single best thing I ever did was buy a video camera and start filming all of the bucks I saw. Having a video record of those encounters is almost as good as taking a trophy deer. Guest Xen
Re: trophy buck hunters where i live, getting a buck during the general season is hard enough. i'll shoot a spike if the opportunity presents itself. my dad and i go hunting together, and always the case is anything with antlers for the first deer. after that, we are a bit more selective. i turned down a decent 3 point one year on the second weekend and then kicked myself for the next 2 hours, telling myself over and over that i should have just shot it. then my big 24" 4x4 came out and i was glad that i waited. 6sixpoint_nobrows
Re: trophy buck hunters i try to pass up on small bucks...i have done really good this year too, i rattled in a nice 4 pointer that was really tall, he will be a great buck in a couple years, and i have also passed one a tall spike and several otehr small bucks....."let em go so they'll grow"
QDMAworks4me
Re: trophy buck hunters I only shoot bucks that have eight points now but I shot about 10 bucks before I started doing this. It presents much more of a challange but much more rewarding in my opinion.
ilhnter
Re: trophy buck hunters i guess i'm a trophy hunter in a way, but not really. During bow season i pass on all the small bucks waiting for Mr. big to show himself. If he doesn't show up by the first gun season, i change my tactics and will shoot whatever gives me the next opportunity, whether it be a doe or small buck. IowaDeerHunter
Re: trophy buck hunters I would consider myself a trophy hunter. We don't want to shoot anything that is less than 4.5 years old. It is hard to let them grow big when you shoot them at 1.5 years old. It is all going to pay off though, because we have a ton of great bucks on camera, and they keep growing.
NY_Bowhunter14
Re: trophy buck hunters 6 point or bigger, rack size doesnt matter to me, it can be a small 6 point or a large 6 point, but if it is a 6 it's getting shot at! Guest fourtrax_300
Re: trophy buck hunters well i'm by no means a trophy huntter but i'm 16 and have been hunting for 6 years. only killed 3 bucks. 2- 6 points and a button buck. now i wont shoot any fawns at all, spikes,or 4 pointers. i will kill anything above that. around here you dont see deer get that big. on the property that i hunt if you pass a 8 point someone else will shoot it if they can. and even smaller bucks. as i get older i will most likely kille bucks that are 8 points or better. but for now i need a few under my belt. but i will still shoot does too. i will never be antler hunter. I will start bow hunting next year and will try for a nice buck for my first but will stick almost anything cause to kill a deer in my first year of bow hunting would be an honor. wtnhunt
Re: trophy buck hunters Dont know that I would call myself a trophy hunter, but I do pass up younger bucks, trying to hold out for 3 1/2 year olds or older.
Ohiobucks
Re: trophy buck hunters I'll let 120" deer walk all day under my stand, not like other "trophy hunters" I know....... I would say I have become a trophy hunter over the last two years. I have shot a few 100" to 120" deer, both with the gun and bow. To me, it is time to wait and see what bigger deer are out there. Shot a decent 10 pointer two years ago on the second day of the bow season, then had a great drop tine buck walk into 2 of my shooting lanes later that year. During gun season, I had a superb 10 point trot past, well within range, and all I could do was watch. QDM says, "Let them go so they can grow." and shoot all the does your freezer and your neighbors will hold.....

Michiganbowhunter_SQ2
Re: trophy buck hunters well as much as i would like to be a trophy hunter...i am not...i lack the one thing that would allow me to be...available hunting land....the only piece of land i get to hunt other than state land (which is a 40 minute drive)...is the 80 acres my uncles father-in-law lets us hunt the gun opener every year....because of this i have never harvested a deer...but after this year i will be doing alot of knocking on doors and asking for permission to hunt or even lease a small piece of land...if i find a place i am going to get my first buck...no matter what size..(maybe with the exception of say a button buck)...out of the way and then try and and put myself on some sort of a management program.
