What is your favorite backboard?

I have a retired guy up the street who likes to do woodwork. He made my first mounting board and it resembled a shield. The next looked like Missouri...boy, did he complain about the confluences of the Mississippi. I am looking for something else...looked at VanDykes displays and came up with a couple ideas, but you guys are really creative, so I thought I would throw the question out there.

What looks good to you guys?

Any kinda hardwood ... you can stain it any color you want ... make sure its dried to ... aged.... Walnut would look good, Cherry if you can find a piece big enough.... Oak of course ... that will be the easiest to find btw.... you can stain it and put like a bar top finsh on it .. you just buy the liquid bar top pour it over it and let it self level .... looks great when its done....

I have fooled around also with various woods and stains. What seems to look good and is pretty inexpensive is maple stained with cherry stain. Wow did it take good. I mean of course if you can get cherry by all means use it. but I bought a 3'piece of maple and red oak from Lowes, traced out a shape, 10" plaque, made 3 of 'em, like a sheild and mounted the skull cap. I have not used the red oak yet, but the grain of the wood in incredible. I will stain that golden oak when the time comes.
