OK, I'm going to Kansas!!!!

An outfitter called me last week and informed me that two of his hunters had to cancel their trip for the second week of rifle. So me and a friend are going to take them. We are driving out on December 4th. I can't wait. I did not expect that I would be going to Kansas this year. Neither, did my superior at work. But, this is a great opportunity, price is very reasonable, so I can;t pass it up!!!!!

Just thought I would share how friggin pumped I am right now.

One question, The only rifle I have is a .300 Weatherby Magnum. Would this be a good caliber rifle for North East Kansas. Or should I think about getting something smaller like a .243 Mag or .270 Mag?

Also, what is the typical weather for the first and second week in December?

Thanks,

-Rossman

The 300 mag should be fine... I wouldn't worry about buying a new gun just weeks from what could be the hunt of a lifetime. If you know the gun and how it shoots, I'd stick with it. NE Kansas will have more timber and terrain than people associate with Kansas.

As for the weather, you never know what you're going to get in Kansas. We have a saying, "if you don't like the weather in Kansas wait 5 minutes and it will change." Typically you can expect highs in the low 50's to the upper 40's, sometimes you'll see some 60's. The mornings can be quite crisp, into the teens and 20's.

Have a great hunt in my home state...

i've been out across kansas and had it so cold with the wind chill, that anything that wasn't covered actually hurt because it was so bitter cold - dress warm, better take a couple extra pieces of clothing just to be safe.

also - good luck, hope you have a fun, safe and successful hunt

more on the weather... as Xen said, Kansas can have extreme temperatures and severe wind chills. What is important is that you prepare well and bring as much warm clothing(layers) as possible. As quickly as it gets bitterly cold, it can get unseasonably warm... especially during deer season. We've had numerous deer seasons when the first weekend is in the 20's with snow on the ground and by the middle of the next week the highs are in the 60's and you have morning fog.

I live right out where you are hunting. The weather is usually around freezing but with no snow. 270 or 30.06 is what I have used and it does fine but the 300 mag would do great. Hve fun and be sure to post pics when you get back!
