dogdoc
It's was a tough opening rifle season weekend for me. Beautiful weather--seeing lots of deer but no mature bucks. Saturday I passed on 3 bucks including a nice 2.5 year old 8 point. Sunday I saw a total of 13 deer but still no shooters. Just lots of does and smaller bucks. Monday morning I only saw two does and didn't hunt monday evening due to family coming in. This morning the alarm clock goes off at 3:00am--man was it tough getting out from under my warm electric blanket---but you don't see bucks in bed (unless your dreamin' ) Legal shooting time is 6:40 and I was in my tower by 5:30 this morning. I decided to hunt my 80 acres in Cleveland County. Drinking a little coffee and playing yahtzee (thanks MCH---I'm hooked on this game now). Fifteen minutes prior to shooting time I lift the windows on the tower and get ready for the morning. The morning started off slow--seeing nothing. There are so many acorns on the ground the deer aren't hitting the plots right now. So by 8:00 I'm back to playing yahtzee and around 8:15 I hear some leaf noise to my left--put the game down figuring it was a squirrel when all of a sudden a shooter buck comes trotting out of the trees. It took all of .001 seconds for me to realize this was a shooter buck. He was about 80 yards away on a fast walk getting ready to hit cover again--it all happened so quick--gun up--cross hairs on shoulder--BOOM! Mule kick and the buck was running. I followed him a little ways in the woods before loosing sight of him. I wait about 15 minutes then go check for blood at impact spot--find good blood. Walk back to the truck--take some clothes off--grab some orange flagging--and take off to track him. Great blood trail: He went a total of 100 yards on a full run and collapsed next to a little tree. The 120 grain core-lokt and Tikka .25-06 did it's job. Great Okie scrub oak buck. Basic 8 point with a forked left G2 giving a total of 9 points. Lots of mass Proud Hunter: now it's back to bowhunting todd

Thayer
Re: Rifle tag filled (pics)...... Very nice buck Todd, way to wait for the big boy. Nice Tikka also...is that a heavy barrel? Did you drag him to a plot for more pics? Way to go...that is what can happen to your bucks with proper nutrition and letting them get to maturity....Have you aged him yet? [/ QUOTE ] I love the Tikka in the .25-06--hardly any kick and a VERY accurate gun. I don't really know if it is a heavy barrel I shot him as he was crossing the plot--he wasn't stopping to eat just searching for girls i guess. I took the first pics where he fell in the timber and then drug him out to the plot for some more pics. The plot is in HORRIBLE shape---too dry. I haven't had him aged yet---I'm going to get him mounted and will have the taxidermist save me the jaw. This is the 4th season hunting this land and the first deer I have killed off of it. I have passed on so many smaller bucks and now it is finally paying off! Thanks everyone! todd
