ousoonerfan22
I picked up some white oak acorns saturday and left them in a bucket of water for a day to pick out the good ones.Today I planted them in a 18"x36" plastic storage container with two bags of potting soil. How long will it take for them to starting coming up? I have them inside our shop.
popgun
Re: planting acorns They are slow to grow. Ten to fifteen feet in ten to twelve years, but will live a hundred years or more. I guess that's why they always say if you grow an white oak tree you are growing it for your grandchildren and great grandchildren. Good luck. ....popgun
ousoonerfan22
Re: planting acorns I mean in this plastic container? Oak trees grow that slow even if you fertilize them every year?
dogdoc
Re: planting acorns yep--they grow SLOW. It will take up to 30 years before they start producing acorns. So you'll be an old man and I'll be in depends before you see any "fruit of your labor" from those oak trees. If you want to plant some oak trees for acorns try to get you the Sawtooth Oak Variety. It is a very fast growing oak and can produce acorns in 5 to 7 years. When I planted some acorns in containers it took around a month before they germinated. todd
wtnhunt
Re: planting acorns Got tons of oak of all varieties saplings (3-5 foot tall trees) in the ground here, too bad the roots are so deep. If they were easier to uproot and live after uprooting, I might consider digging some up.
Thayer
Re: planting acorns Try growing other kinds of mast trees...apple, persimmon, crabapple, dogwoods, pear, or whatever kind of fruit wood is adaptable for your area...takes awhile for them to produce but you won't too old to enjoy those trees. 7 years usually for these to produce. Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: planting acorns Shoot, you might as well go ahead and plant 'em this Spring. After all, my preacher says that "A man who plants trees that he knows he'll never see bear fruit is called a visionary." I always thought that was pretty profound.
