just wondering if this is a good rifle? all i know about the one i might be getting, is that it's a bolt action with the blued barrel. basically, i might be getting the gun in as a trade for a pistol. if anybody has one, has shot one, has a friend of a friend, any feedback would be greatly appreciated. - Thanks

Re: Ruger M77 Mag?

I have a M77 MarkII in .300 win mag...Strut has the same gun...my buddy has the same gun...my buddy's brother in law has the same gun...a friend from work has the M77 MarkII in .300 Win. short mag...as far as I know...we all love 'em!

Top it with a good scope and you'll be happy.

Re: Ruger M77 Mag?

I've got a M77 in a short action and don't have any problems, but there is a small problem with the long actions. If you handload and only seat the bullet deep enough in the case to meet the maximium overall length, some of the magazines are a fraction too short and the cartridges won't feed correctly. If you shoot factory ammo, I've never heard of it being a problem.

Re: Ruger M77 Mag?

Since you say mag. this may not help but I have a 77 in .260 (my daughters gun) and a 77 in 22-250.

The 250 shoots under an inch with every load I've tried and cloverleafs quite a few of the loads I've fed it. The .260 shoots right around an inch with the 140 grn factory loads and just under with the 125 grn partition load we use. I haven't spent a lot of time working loads but I would think they could be better. I Really like the Rugers. They look good and do what they are supposed to do. I wouldn't have a prob recommending them and wouldn't hesitate to buy another if one struck my fancy.

Hope that helps.

the gun i'm trading for it was $269 (my cost)

I just ordered in a new Ruger M77 MarkII with a laminate stock chambered in a .300 win mag. for a friend. New...my cost is $465. I'd say if your trading a $269 dollar gun even up...your prob. getting the better end of the deal.

Re: Ruger M77 Mag?

Xen,

Do you know if it is a M77 or a M77 Mark II?

the Mark II is the newer version and has a Winchester type safety (3 position?). I have the older M77 which has the tang style safety which I like but does not lock the bolt. Many Rugers need a trigger job as Bill Ruger caved into the lawyers.

For the price it seems like you are getting a good deal. Jump on it. what caliber?

Re: Ruger M77 Mag?

thanks for all the info guys. the gun is a 7mm mag, and it is a mark II. the owner claims the gun is in perfect working order. says he's hunted with it for a few years and has never got to shoot at a deer. there are a couple of small marks in the wood stock, but the blueing is at least 99%. he says that he's only put about 10 rounds through the gun to sight in a scope that was on it. i'm thinking for something that cost me $269, even if i don't like it, i can sell it for at least 400. i'll let you guys know how it turns out.

thanks again for all the great input
