Blacktail buck down

What an awesome morning. I was at odds on where to hunt this morning (since it is my wifes day off and I could get out early). I wanted to hunt Chester's because the farm has been a bit of a washout this year. I decided on the farm, just because I haven't been down there for about a week.

I got there real early. It was really thick fog this morning and has been for the last week. I figured if I got down early, I might just get away without spooking any deer off the field, as I worked my way over to the stream edge.

I had that buck get past me 2 mornings in a row last week, so I had set up a little sitting spot, pretty well out in the open, with a few weeds on my right and left and a brush pile behind me. My camo is getting so washed out, I probably blended into the lighter grass better anyway.

At first light, I saw my first grey ghosts in the fog, as 4 does made their way across high in the field and then ran up my way and exited across the stream. The slight breeze was perfect for me.

I watched a few more does come across and then down toward me.

One was headed right at me, as I noticed one of the grey ghosts across the field was a buck chasing a doe. The doe that was closest to me decided she was going to go around me and behind me, which would put her right in my lap almost. The buck in the mean time was closing the distance too, and was about 1/2 the way across the field coming toward me. He stopped a few times and looked right in my direction, as if he new that blob over in the grass wasn't there yesterday. I was right out in the open basically, but had a good back-drop with the brush-pile behind me. I just sat motionless.

The doe had stepped in the weeds beside me, not 10 feet from me, and was staring me down. I wasn't even looking at her, because I dared not move. I figured I would get busted by the buck, once she busted me. Well, she knew that blob sitting there wasn't a good thing, so she jumped back into the field and headed across in front of me, stopping to give me a second and third glance. The buck liked the idea that she turned around and headed back down along the field, and he was herding that other doe even closer.

The doe that was beside me exited across the stream on a trail 30 yrds out from me, as the other doe with the buck in tow followed.

He was making his was across pretty slowly, with the odd, "head-down" rutting jog to catch up to the doe.

He had forgotten about me by this time and just wanted to keep up with the girls.

The second doe exited slowly toward the stream as he closed the distance. He had to turn to go across in front of me, so I raised the bow and started to draw as he started jogging toward the doe who had now disappeared to my left. Luckily, for me, he caught me in mid draw and put on the brakes, right in the last possible shooting lane I had. One more step and he would have been behind a bunch of tangle and weeds.

He stood motionless, as I quickly estimated the distance at 30 yrds. I settled my 30 yrd pin (30 yrd pin on my Savage Pendulum sight..shooting from the ground) on him ...breathed out, held and .......wack

I couldn't believe it. He almost keeled right there...stubbled and took off over the stream, which was less than 20 yrds from him. I heard him struggle as he crossed the stream and then crash and moan on the other side .......WOW. Thank you Lord.

The time was 7:15am smile.gif

No blood-trailing for this puppy...LOL

I don't know why this turned out so smudgy, but the red line was where the buck worked his way across the field following two does and interested in the one that was beside me. You can see where he stopped, when I drew. One more step and he would have been behind a bunch of bramble. It was now or never.

He broke my arrow at the fletching. Bad deer...LOL

He was less than 20 yards from the stream when I nailed him, and fell just on the other side. No blood-trailing for this baby. That was the fastest I've seen a deer go down, besides spine shot of course. Sorry it's so dark. Picture was taken about 7:45am, with thick fog

I had to drag him out into the field to get a better picture. He's a clean mature 2x2 with no brow-tines

Caught this doe on film, as I was dragging out my buck. She was a late comer coming across the field. When I got half way across the field there was another doe and buck crossing in the same spot

NOTE - After dragging my buck across the stream and out into the field, I looked down at the far end of the field, and there, standing in a gap that goes into the back field, was a big buck. Couldn't tell exactly what he all had for head gear, because he was just a big grey silhouette standing there facing me. He was big bodied, high and wide smile.gif..dang...LOL

Then, as I was dragging my buck across the field, two more does came through high in the field, with another nice buck in tow.

What a beautiful morning ...just awesome. With lots of rutting action to boot grin.gifgrin.gif

Thank you Lord cool.gif
