LifeNRA
What would be the best ammo for deer in my .357 Smith & Wesson? Thanks!
TxAgJeepr
Re: .357 Ammo??? I use 150g JHP. Dad used 210g HP. Really depends on which one your gun likes the best, how far your going to shoot, the size of the deer, and where you're planning on hitting it. LifeNRA
Re: .357 Ammo??? I have 158 grain JHP. Typical whitetail deer, I feel very comfortable out to 40-50 yards. Aimming just like I would the rifle. Where do you aim at?
VTbowman
Re: .357 Ammo??? Life- I asked this earlier in this year and Handgunnr told me the Winchester Partition Gold in 180 grain. I was carrying a Ruger Blackhawk .357 mag revolver and had used the 158g HP my dad gave me. Alas I never bought the 180s since I had other $$$ obligations... LifeNRA
Re: .357 Ammo??? Well thanks guys! I bought 158 grain JSP's. I figure the hollow points would not give me deeper penetration. I am limiting my shot to 25 yards. I have a doe tag from archery, and my father and I often said about doing this! Well I am! [/ QUOTE ] With a 25 yard shot, I would shoot about 4 inches up right behind the front leg. Quartering away is your best choice, but a side view shot wouldn't be bad either. Quartering toward I would shoo right in the middle of the shoulder 4-6 up from the front leg. You may not get an exit wound, but that 158gr. hollowpoint will do some serious damage and it won't go far.
TxAgJeepr
Re: .357 Ammo??? I usually go for head/neck shots but limit the range to no more than 40 yards. If I don't think I can make a clean kill, I'll pass the shot and curse at myself for not bringing 'mr death' (270 WIN) with me.
