NY911Bowhunter
Some of you may remember a few weeks back, I posted that out of the blue, my Grandfather, (actually my Uncle, who Gramp turned the land over to) was offered alot of money for the 85 acres we hunt on. This land has been in our family for 6 generations (including my 2 y/o son). Well, yesterday was the last day we were able to hunt on it - my brother and I hunted in the morning one last time. (oddly enough - something our schedules have never permitted in years!) Then we took down my 2 remaining stands. Today the deal went through. Land that since long before I was born, we were free to roam as we pleased, hunt, fish, scout, picnic, teach.....we are no longer allowed on! It absoutly breaks my heart. As far as I am concerned, my season is over - there is still about 10 acres in the woods behind Gramp's house that is huntable, he even hung a stand back there. But heck - it's not the same. We lost 85 acres of beutiful pines, hardwoods, a stream, 3 small ponds, one good sized pond, feilds, ridges, Our Cabin ........like I said - I'm heartbroken. Cherish the land you on y'all - you never know when it will disappear!
puffy
Re: The Land is Gone! I didn't get to read your previous post, but I can understand why you would be heartbroken about the land. Losing that land is like saying so-long to a life partner. Memories, good ,bad, and indifferent shared by youself , your family and friends. I'm sorry to hear that your Uncle let it go. I know I couldn't do it voluntarily ....................................Hunt Smart-Eat Well
Tominator
Re: The Land is Gone! man, that breaks my heart reading about it. someday soon, i'm hoping to start a legacy by buying some land. i'm seriously thinking of cashing in my 403b and buying land. the way i see it is that the odds of me actually retiring and spending that money are not good, but the odds of land being there for me and my family to use after i'm gone is pretty good. really sorry to hear your news bud. huntn4bucks
Re: The Land is Gone! Man I know that has to be tough. Land prices don't seem to be getting any cheaper and good hunting property is really hard to get permission to hunt on. I finally had to bite the bullet and buy my own land. I've had to make some sacrifices to get it but at least it's mine now and my family will have a place to hunt for many years.
Doc
Re: The Land is Gone! This is a sad story that is getting to be all too common. The big huntable parcels of land are all getting busted up and land prices are getting to be too high for land owners to ignore. In many cases the farmers must use the land as their retirement funds. In other cases, the taxes are getting too high for people to just hang on to. In all cases, reliable transportation and great highways are bringing more and more urban dwellers out into the rural areas to break up, buy and post. It's just a sign of the times and a glimpse into the future. Doc

NYBUCK
Re: The Land is Gone! Dan that really stinks. I know by your post and our conversations how much that land meant to you. I feel for you bud, I wish I had something to say to help you out. I was three years old when my father sold the farm, to young to know any better, but I drive by it all the time and think of what it would have been like to have that farm to hunt and pass on to my children. David_218
Re: The Land is Gone! A lot of this going on here in Southern Indiana too. I've lost several good hunting woods to developers, housing subdivisions, ect This is one faction that is going to put an end to hunting, by the general public, as if there is no place to hunt then interest in sport hunting vanishes forever. GWSmith
Re: The Land is Gone! I'm sure you have plenty of motivation to start your own traditional hunting land.....look into your sons eyes. Some day hopefully your son will tell his son about what Grandpa started for him!!!
