slugshooter
Well, my hopes for bagging a birthday buck this morning were squelched by a group of squirrel hunters who decided that the area they parked at to hunt wasn't big enough for them and they decided to venture into mine and several other areas to shoot squirrels. I mean, it's not like there isn't plenty of acreage out there that they can't find a place away from other hunters. I guess they feel that since they are squirrel hunting they get the run of the game land regardless of where other people are hunting. They were so close I could hear them running their mouths after the lit up on some squirrels, this was when they were about 100-150 yards in front of me, then they moved to an area about 150 yards to my left and proceeded to light up the area like it was downtown Baghdad. That and their dog, arparparparparparp. I was so mad I couldn't even think straight, ohhhhhhhhh, the things that went through my mind if their dog had come near me. Wasted day, I probably should have gotten out of the tree after the deal but I had hopes that maybe the idiots would push a deer my way, but, in all honesty, they probably succeded in driving away every deer in a 5 mile radius. johnf
Re: Stinkin Squirrel Hunters!!! I shot the biggest deer probibly of my life after falling 20ft and breaking my back. I would think that you would at least be in for a nice 6pt. Sorry for your bad luck.
Shaun_300
Re: Stinkin Squirrel Hunters!!! I would be feelin' the same way you are man! That sure would be aggrivating. My cousin and I went crossbow hunting a few weeks ago, and people less than a half mile from us started firing a semi-auto .22, clip after clip after clip... Then they decided to start pepperin' off the center fire rifles. What an aggrivating afternoon that was!
BowtechTurkeyHunter
Re: Stinkin Squirrel Hunters!!! Tough there were you on public land then?.... obviously since you didnt say they were trespassing ... that too bad about the hunters... buckee
Re: Stinkin Squirrel Hunters!!! I was just sitting here thinking You know what Marc ... those squirrel hunters are probably in some Realtreed-Squirrel forum right now complaining about today, when a squirrel ran up this tree and they couldn't shoot it because some dumb deer hunter was sitting there. (just trying to cheer you up)
wtnhunt
Re: Stinkin Squirrel Hunters!!! Have heard a lot of squirrel hunters back behind us here lately. Thing is, I dont think they have permission to be back there, the lease as I understand is held by just three guys who deer and duck hunt. Got me to thinking a little here the other day, here I am sitting in a tree and these guys are all over the place in the bottom oblivious to my presence just the other side of the river from me shooting .22's in the air in every direction. Tominator
Re: Stinkin Squirrel Hunters!!! Was this on public land? Was it gun season? I hate when that happens. There's one particular farm where I hunt where the neighbor squirrel hunts. It's quite a jolt when he shoots a squirrel when I'm oblivious to his presence. I don't like it either, but not much you can do, especially if it's public ground. I know in Ohio, during the gun season for deer, you can't hunt squirrel for that week. If you were on public land sluggo, thats the way it goes! They have just as much of a right to be there as you do! Plus I am sure they didnt see you since you were up in a tree. Maybe if they seen you they would have moved away. But it is frustrating when this happans. Got to find some private land.

slugshooter
Re: Stinkin Squirrel Hunters!!! Everybody has made some valid points as far as the public land thing goes, and no John (LifeNRA) I wouldn't have shot the dog, although the thought would have went through my mind, I was however planning on throwing my orange toboggan at them if they came along. Yes, this is public land, I think next year I am going to get my Fort Bragg permit and hunt out there, the deer are bigger out there anyway, plus, they close off areas for certain types of hunting, there are areas out there just for squirrel, dove, quail, bow, muzzleloader, and rifle, plus, they manage everything and put food plots out there. The current state record for NC came from Fort Bragg. Anyhoo, about the squirrel hunters and public land. One of the first problems is one, there is hardly ever a game warden out there (which some people would find good) to regulate things and check up on people, plus, it is only a 3 day a week hunting area, Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday, so anyone who wants to hunt is generally out there on Saturday, there were quite a few out there yesterday but I chalk that up to the holiday. The other thing is there is plenty of land out there. I don't know what gate these guys parked at, but they were all over, lets just say it went from being in front of me to hearing their voices and the dog barking, to barely hearing them at all, so I know they were covering a lot of ground, I am sure they ruined other peoples hunting as well. I never actually saw them, but when they were on my left I contemplated getting out of the tree and going over to them but felt I'd be better off staying away since I was by myself. Another thing, I am not entirely sure that having a dog on that particular game land is legal, I know for a fact that you can't have a dog for deer hunting on that tract, so what makes a squirrel dog any different. In fact, they could have been deer hunting and if the warden stopped them they could say they were squirrel hunting. They really should have it broken down during the week, lets say, Tuesday, Thusday and Friday you can hunt Squirrel, Dove, Bunnies, whatever,, M,W,S, you hunt deer, of course, that would necessitate a game warden being out there to make sure noone hunts what they aren't supposed to on a certain day, and that isn't going to happen. North Carolina is so lax on hunting regs, really, if we had deer like they have in Illinois or Iowa, people would come here more because you can get away with more, plus, we are allowed 4 bucks and 2 does, but it doesn't matter if you see one buck a season. Oh well, maybe I should write a letter to the NC Wildlife, but they'd say there's nothing they can do about it. I wrote the commissioner a letter one time about dog running and Sunday hunting and never got a response.

dg
Re: Stinkin Squirrel Hunters!!! If you go to Ft Bragg, I use to go to an area called NTA 2, and 4 (back in the 90's). I assume it's still there? Some nice deer in the thickets.
TreeStandBowHunter
Re: Stinkin Squirrel Hunters!!! When I was stationed at Cherry Point, one of the base Game Wardens there left to go work at the Game Warden shack there at Ft. Bragg and when I talked to him about a year after he wsa there, he said Ft. Bragg has some HUGE deer. I would check it out
