I have the 870 express 12g with a 28 inch barrel, and i want to maybe add a slug gun barrel so i can use it for deer. Would anyone recommend what kind of barrel that remington sells would be best for deer hunting with this gun? Appreciate any info from someone who knows about shooting slugs from this gun

Re: Question on slug barrel for my 870?

In my experience Hastings makes a very good rifled barrels for 870's and other shotguns. I've got one on an 870 with a scope and it shoots very well. I think Cabelas still sells them and I know Hastings has their own web site. My barrel is 22" but if I were getting a new one I'd look at the 26" heavy barrel which Hastings makes. I think all of Hastings barrels will shoot 3" loads but you have to go by what your receiver will handle...i.e if you gun is a 2 3/4" gun you can't shoot the 3" loads. Hope this helps.

Re: Question on slug barrel for my 870?

Remington offers a fully rifled deer barrel with rifle sights and they offer a fully rifled barrel with the cantilever scope mount. Both are 20" barrels and run anywhere between $200 to $300. Remington also offers smoothbore slug barrels as well. I have the fully rifled with the rifle sights version on my 870.

Re: Question on slug barrel for my 870?

Like Archerjg pointed out, their best barrels are fully rifled and come with open sights or cantilever scope mounts.

The Hastings barrel like EKYhunter pointed out are also good quality aftermarket barrels. The Express guns are designed to shoot 3" loads so you are ok there.

Another option is the Mossberg barrels for the Rem 870. They offer cantilever scope mounts or open sights. I had one on my 870 and it shot great. It was much cheaper than the Remington brand.

Re: Question on slug barrel for my 870?

If you can't find one on the forums, order one through Cabelas or BassPro. Do what I did and order the model that Mossberg makes for the 870. The fully rifled version from Mossberg is only a little bit more than a non-rifled barrel made from Remington. At 50 yards my 870 is dead center and about 2.5" high, and a 5 shot group pretty much makes one big hole. At 100 yards they are about 5" low dead center, and a 5 shot group will all be touching.

For the record, my gun really likes Winchester Super X Sabots, 3" or 2 3/4".
