Doc
Here comes a dumb question...........What exactly is scent? Is it a gas, or what? If it is a gas, do the molecules stick to things and get re-released as the wind blows against it? If your scent blows out to the trail for 5 minutes, but never goes there again for the rest of your hunt, is the trail area contaminated? In other words, do scent molecules drift out there and stick to things but continually break loose so they can get to the deer's nose? Does high wind dissipate the scent molecules or does it just spread it farther with the same intensity? If you are sitting in a dense enough thicket, does that trap the scent? If you walk down a trail, touching branches and goldenrod and such, you are depositing scent as you go. But how do the stuck molecules get released so the deer can smell it? These are all weird little thoughts and questions that run through my mind as I sit in my stand and watch an occasional puff of wind carry my scent in a bad direction. It seems to me that we may not all understand the details and fundamentals of something that is so important to hunting. Or maybe it's just me that doesn't understand. Guest bigbuckmiddaugh
Re: Scent I'd say yes, it is moleculer, unless you fart, lol. The scent eliminator i got, when you spray it, it breaks up the moleculer structure of the scent itself. I have never been winded this year since using it. I believe, if you wash or de scent your clothing properly you'll be fine there. Now, what i really think the deer smells the best! I think it has something to do with body heat, heating up the moleculer structure of scent and it going out into the air. Kinda like coffee or anything when heated. You can smell it so much better. As for the wind blowing your moleculer structure around, i'd say yes, depending apon your body odor.lol If you hunt during a light mist, your scent gets dilluted. High winds, it goes over a broader area. This is something to think about! We have fall scent spray, fake lures, cover scents. Here is the question!! No one or Not one thing out there can really tell us how it smells to a deer!! There sense of smell is so much better, that earth cover scent might smell like foot odor! You don't know! Just because it smells like earth to us, doesn't mean it smells like earth to the the deer! You might be spending your hard earned money on product that don't work. Not one company has provided legit proof to how it smells to a deer! I just thought of an product too!
AdvantageTimberLou
Re: Scent Hey Big Buck, Remember when Fred Trost questioned whether deer urine actually worked and mentioning that human urine does not spook deer as most thought. I believe Fred got into trouble with those comments as the scent companies didn't take too kindly to him saying the scents aren't really as effective as they want you to beleive. That is why I think he lost his job at the TV show Michigan Out of Doors. Makes you wonder what deer really do smell and if its what we smell. Something to ponder why we all sit in our stands. VTbowman
Re: Scent I know scent is molecular and does get blown all around and sticks to other stuff. Over time it will be spread out more and more making it not as intensely "smelling" as it was. Rain can wash it away too. But like you I wonder just how much is out there, and how far it goes, etc. How long it takes or just how much "scent" will alarm a deers nose. (???) I have just seen too many deer walk down wind of me and had no reaction, bad or good, to "my scent". Then I have seen deer who just look right at me from like 300 yards away and there was no way they "saw" me. Must of winded me. There's no way to tell. Just pray for luck to be on your side... buckee
Re: Scent My wife and I like to watch those forensic science, cold case files, etc, shows. I remember one time, they were showing this case where a murder happened, the body was put into a car and taken down a free-way to a body-dump location on an off-road. It was miles away. This bloodhound (I think it was ...some sort of hound anyway) found a scent trail on the freeway, from the body being in the trunk of the car and followed it all the way to the dump location, while it trailed it down the middle of the freeway to the off-road. That would imply or suggest that the scent falls to the ground rather quickly (at least some of it), and attaches itself to whatever it falls on. I found that story just amazing....truely amazing ...and it told me a lot about scent. It does stick around a long time and you don't even have to touch anything. Does anyone else remember that murder case ?? I think it involved a child.
Guest bigbuckmiddaugh
Re: Scent Yeah i remember Fred Trost that year! Those scent companies were pee'd off! (lol) I know he got into trouble. He is still hosting the show! Infact, it's on tonight at 8:00. I think he shouldn't have gotten into trouble! If they are doing that, they are misleading the buyer, let alone selling something that is fake! AND he is title to his opinion. Rather good or bad! If i new for sure the pee was from a cow, heck yeah i would say something! I was going to test a scent this year and carry the product. Well... i called the guy on the product, LOL, he never sent it to me! lmao
AdvantageTimberLou
Re: Scent I know its on at 8 tonight and then at 8:30 its Kyle Randall's show but I don't think Fred is the host anymore of Michigan Out of Doors. It's a young guy and a blond gal who are the hosts of it. Pretty sure Fred is gone and has another show. That scent deal was the reason I think he left. Fred told it like it was, problem is the people paying the advertisment dollars didn't care to hear that type of talk. I always liked Fred, told it like is was, the kind of guy you would love to have at deer camp!! Lou
