Over 40 hunting

I went out this morning with my 15 year old and the temperature was in the low teens. I dressed for it but still got a chill. (It was a great and fun hunt with a couple almost chances)

However once I got home I felt old and tired. I fell asleep and woke up feeling worse and called off the afternoon hunt since I would rather go back to same spot in the morning.

Does the cold affect you over 40 guys as much as it is starting to affect me? frown.gif

Re: Over 40 hunting

It sounds like you have the symptoms of "Aging".

I got up this morning before five, still fat and sassy from over-stuffing on yesterday's turkey.

I got myself a cup of coffee and got my morning chores done.

It was only about 6:AM, and I still had about 30 minutes to get out to the stand in plenty of time before twilight.

I took my cup of coffee out on the back patio and smoked a cigarette.

The coffee tasted really good.

I went back inside the house and crawled back under my electric blanket and was back to sleep in less than two minutes.

I'm almost sure the "Big One" came right by my stand this morning, and I wasn't there to tag him.

I didn't get cold.

I didn't have to drag him out of the woods by myself.

I didn't have to clean him by myself.

I didn't get tempted, and take a smaller buck, thus using my buck tag.

But I was comfortable.

Maybe tomorrow....

Re: Over 40 hunting

Just when I thought I was comfortable with the clocking stricking 40, you gotta bring up the cold, tired, better-of-in-bed sentiments. To tell the truth, I think I started to feel some of it when I turned 30!

Maybe I better look to a warmer climate to make the trek to the stand more comfortable. 0 and below sure makes your bones and teeth chatter (and your gun, backpack, boots, boots, gloves, hat, handwamers, hanky, tree steps, tree stands, etc...).

Off to the woods tomorrow morning, can't wait for 0-5 degrees and snow.

Re: Over 40 hunting

Well...I'm not quite 40 yet...39, 10 months and 2 days ...lol. Close enough. I have actually found that I take the cold better now then when I was younger. I really want to say it's because I'm smarter now...lol. But I'm not sure about that. A lot of the places I hunt are 1 -2 miles hike into the woods. I have found that if I dress light walking in, and strip all my upper layers off when I get to my spot, dry off ,and redress, I stay a lot warmer. I went out this morning. It was in the upper teens, with a 4 degree windchill. I walked about 1 1/2 miles to my spot. I sat for almost 5 hours, and could easily have been comfortable all day.

Re: Over 40 hunting

Heated toilet seat is not a bad ideal. grin.gif

I feel pretty good this morning. The temp is in the mid 20's but both older sons bailed on me. (The 15 year has wrestling parctice at 9 am so I will just hunt the afternoon)

I took a couple ibuprofen this morning before I took mama to work so that is a help.

Is Aleve any better?

Re: Over 40 hunting

I am 56 years old and I don't feel any ill effects from the cold. As one ages up past the 40 year old level one must excersise more and have a proper diet. I walk a mile each and every morning, before sunrise, and eat healthy. I Feel Fine and have no plans to give up on hunting anytime soon! grin.gif

Re: Over 40 hunting

Just recently turned 42, although my dad and brother thought I turned 43, and my youngest sister thought I was 41, I don't know what that says about my family except that we all share a Polish heritage.

Either way, I'm 42, and I suppose after all the surgeries, especially the one that took a lobe of lung, yeah, I do feel it a bit more now that I'm over 40. Trouble is, I think the same way I did when I was 18, so I keep going out. ohiobucks can verify that, because he still acts 16.

Sheesh, do I have to teach you guys everything? You want a heated seat? Just hold it until your wife goes first. grin.gif

Hang in there Fred. If I know you like I think I know you, you kind of smile when you flop on the couch all sore like you are because you know, deep down, you're still doing it, unlike most guys your age. cool.gif

Re: Over 40 hunting

Cold is cold no matter how old you are..if the deer are moving and your dressed for it I dont think age has much to do with it..I love late bow season just for that fact alone...it's not uncommon to be out in -10 or colder some eve. you only hunt for the last 1 and 1/2 hours when the deer are moving, but you see alot of deer

Re: Over 40 hunting

I think the coldest I ever got was about 10-12 years ago-a storm was moving in and deer were out feeding early in the afternoon-I went out into the bush and found a little hayfield that a nice buck had been travelling too-the does were out already-I didn't dress warm enough-no gloves even. It got pretty blizzardy-I even still hunted all around those does so I could move and warm up. I killed that buck right at the end of the day but I was soo cold I couldn't get my knife to work to notch the tags. I stabbed them to his hide then hiked back a mile or so to my vehicle-warmed up then came back. One thing if you get cold and then start feeling reallky warm again that's not a good thing. That buck only grossed in the 140's but I got him mounted just because of the memory. I lung shot him twice and he dropped about 10 yards from a 200 foot deep coulee-that would of made it a real chore.
