Hunting with Dogs??!!!

Hey Guys and Gals. Just wanted to get everyone's take on something. I got out of a lease on a little over 600 acres I had been hunting for over 5 years. The reason I gave up my spot on the lease is because the guys that have the lease on the property that bordered ours were dog hunters. They would run dogs every day all day and this made still-hunting very hard. The deer got very skiddish early in the season. Plus the dog hunters had no respect for our property. Their dogs were coming on our land constantly and running deer. They'd pull up in their trucks and yell for the dogs 100 yards away from my stand. What is your take on dog hunters and do you think it should be banned in every State?

Re: Hunting with Dogs??!!!

Being from North Carolina you and I both know how big running dogs is in this state. There are all kinds of reasons, tradition,.......well, that's the only reason I have heard for those who want to continue to run dogs. The opposition has more ground to stand on. If I were a private land owner that bordered anothers land where they ran dogs, I can tell you now there would be problems, because, in my experience, dog runners don't care where their dogs go. Sunday hunting is illegal in NC, I was at work on a Sunday and a group came on campus because their dogs had trailed a deer across the river and swam clear across the river onto the college. I know this is not indicative of every dog runner, but I have never heard any good situations arising from running dogs. A former co-worker of mine was trying to get dog running banned in his county and really statewide because he was tired of dogs being run on his property and tearing up his land.

On a personal level, I want nothing to do with running dogs, because to me, it isn't hunting. Plus, there's nothing that looks better in this state then driving along and seeing a group of dog runners on the side of the road drinking beer with rifles in hand, laying around with their cracks showing, that all serves to make a hunters image look that much better. People don't see me out in a tree waiting for a deer to come by, they see the slob on the side of the road. I also don't believe it is ethical to let a pack of dogs run wild chasing a deer over the river and through the woods until the deer can't run anymore and then taking an easy shot. I saw a bear hunting video on huntingfootage.com where a pack of dogs were chasing a bear, they finally tree'd the bear and the hunter waled up to the tree and shot the bear out of the tree. IMHO, that's not ethical hunting, I have never and will never have anything to do with running dogs.

Well, me being 15, i started hunting on stands when i was 10, no dogs, but a couple years ago i decided to join a hunt club, and they run dogs in Va. Virginia is one of the states that is known for running dogs. Running dogs is a way of hunting, its a tradition, its a way of life, and for that to be banned is wrong. I see it this way, dog drivers love the sport as much as anyone else in the world does, they take care of the dogs, they love the dogs, they know the dogs, and most of the time the dogs are their friends, and you cant take that away. If i had to pick running dogs or still hunting, i just couldnt choose, because when your still hunting you get an adrenaline when you hear crunch, crunch, snap, and see a deer, and when your driving dogs you get an adrenaline of hearing the dogs running towards you.

Re: Hunting with Dogs??!!!

It's kinda surprising and sad to hear you guys say that you would shoot the dogs if they were under your stand.

Is it their fault? No!! They don't know boundries. It's up to the handler to control where they run. tp shoot them because they have a bad handler is wrong, period!!

As for dog hunting in general, it's illegal here in CT and I'm glad.

I'm not for any type of dog hunting be it for deer, bears, mountain lion, etc.

Shooting an animal out of a tree or when it's laid down due to total exhaustion isn't very sporting to me.

But if it's legal where you live so be it. I will not judge you for doing it.

The only exception I can see is if you are tracking a mountain lion that has attacked and killed someone.

These are just MY opinions.

If it is legal, fine with me. If it is illegal, fine with me.

Ditto...but if the dogs are running on private land without permission, it's not OK with me

That's the problem. I've yet to see a dog that could read a posted sign. The day I see a pack of dogs hit the property line, turn around and give up the chase, it's OK with me too.

I'm a stand/still hunter who hunts in a big dog running area. Carry on your tradition all you want, just keep the dogs on your property. I know. It can't be done. That's a problem, don't you think.
