MossySNPR
Re: Hunting with Dogs??!!! We do it for deer every year, stands in the morning, run dogs, lunch, then stands at night. We love it, its great commoradory. Mind you, we do this on our trip up north every year, where its not all farm country just out in the middle of nowhere at our cottage. Theres 11 of us and about 6 dogs, we all have radio's for communication, and its awesome to hear the dogs comming, and you know a deer could be anywhere near by. We know our area up there so we set guys up along every possible runway, beaver dams, where ponds meet, funnels, so we get deer every year on the dogs. VermontHunter
Re: Hunting with Dogs??!!! [ QUOTE ] ALL YOU DOG SHOOTERS BETTER CHECK YOUR LOCAL LAWS, THEY ARE PRETTY SEVERE. ALSO IT SAYS ALOT ABOUT YOUR ETHICS OR LACK THERE OF. POOR YOU, YOUR DEER HUNT GOT MESSED UP BECAUSE A DOG GOT IN YOUR HUNTING AREA SO YOU DECIDE TO SHOOT A NEIGHBORS DOG. SHOOT MY COON DOG BECAUSE SHE BREAKS OFF ON A DEER CHASE AND YOU WILL BE PUNISHED BY THE FULL EXTENT THAT THE LAW ALLOWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [/ QUOTE ] NOT to get you riled up here but..... Here in Vermont that dog that breaks away and chases deer may just have YOU on the recieving end of the LAW... Here in Vermont we have what they call a nusience law that says any and all canines that are chasing deer on private land can be shot in protection of said deer, and if the owner is reconized he/she will be held accountable for such said animal.... Remember your dog has NO right to invade private property and that the owner shall mantain control of his animal at all times.... Do we find it pleasant to shoot a defenseless dog ?? NOT BY ANY MEANS,,, but we find it even more unpleaseant to see a dog chasing a deer in 4 ft. of snow knowing it hasn't a prayer of getting away.. Guest IBO_bowhunter
Re: Hunting with Dogs??!!! Using dogs is illegal in IN except to track after the animal has been hit. I used to coon hunt so I kind of know what everyone is talking about. Dogs can't read but it is the responsability of the handler to make sure that the dogs do not trespass. Now, does anyone here actually think you can call a dog off of a deer, I don't think so. Running dogs for deer is just not ethical for so many reasons. Those hunters that do run dogs for deer are not ethical because they know when they unleash those dogs that they will go on someone elses land, that more than likely, they do not have permission to hunt. As for shooting the dog, I will tell the hunter one time to keep the dog off of the property one time and the consequences, if he doesn't, then he must not care about his dog too much. I do not have a problem with coon hunters or coyote hunters, at least not in my area, because most of them have permission and most of the coyote hunters don't hunt them during deer season. unioncountyslayer
Re: Hunting with Dogs??!!! It was good to hear everyone's comments on this issue. It was a huge frustration of mine for years and it's good to hear the feedback. Just a few comments on what has been said. I do agree that if a dog is running deer on private land, without a collar, he's going to get shot. As far as the dogs with tracking collars that the dog boys are using, if they get on my land running deer, which they have in the past. I have always carried dog bones with me on stand and there are a few hounds that have ended up at the animal shelter when I got through with them. And as far as the dog hunters loving their dogs like friends, I would have to disagree from my experience. Most of these dogs have been very skinny (ribs showing) from lack of care. Guest fourtrax_300
Re: Hunting with Dogs??!!! never been exposed to it but it's illegal here and IMHO it should stay that way ! only rabbits, birds, coon, should be huntedd with dogs and thats cause it is much much harder without them. wtnhunt
Re: Hunting with Dogs??!!! It is not legal in Tennessee to run deer with dogs. Glad it is not legal. Wish that the rabbit hunters could keep their dogs from chasing the deer.
VermontHunter
Re: Hunting with Dogs??!!! [ QUOTE ] 99.9% of the time the dogs NEVER catch the deer [/ QUOTE ] I will disagree on that statement.... A deer is a burst runner,, they can run like the dickens for a very short period of time.... A dog will out last a deer in a chase,, A dog will actually run a deer to total exhaustion until it collapses.

unioncountyslayer
Re: Hunting with Dogs??!!! NC Hunter06 hopefully you'll read this because I disagree with the ribs showing as being a healthy hound. I'm not saying they need to be fat, but the hounds I have seen running deer have been extremly malnurished. And as far as the deer being crippled, could that maybe have been caused by these hounds running the deer in fright and not thinking about his or her body and where they are running. Just something to think about...My $.
