So how is your rifle season going as of now? The 1st day saw two does which were this yrs. or lasts fawns. And today the second day got out late had to go to school and take a final which happened to also be the last day of technical school. Don't know about your areas but here in Auburn, PA on club property deer numbers are down and you just aren't seeing the deer like you would like to. But heck it's only two days in give it time I know. Well goodluck all my fellow pennsylvania hunters and friends. Keep us posted.

Re: PA Harvest count

Didn't see a whole lot in the area I hunted in Bradford. A few does and a couple of fork horns and spikes. Nothing legal to shoot. Lot of doe were shot. When are the PA hunters going to get it? You cannot overharvest the doe. A girl next to me shot 2 and her boyfriend had shot one. They had tags to shoot 4 more. confused.gif

I been busting my butt for three days, havent seen A DEER!!! I hunt private land too, 200 acres of mountain land and not one deer! This the result of HR!!! I just wish it was still bow season! I seen more deer then! There is state game land on the other side of the mountain. I heard today they had a drive on. Now you all need to know they walk for miles and miles! They got three deer! Thats it! THREE DEER! I believe HR went way to far!

This was my first archery season, been hunting for 30 years. I got a doe tag because of this. I dont think Ill be filling this tag out even if I see a doe!

heh well I have only been to PA once, to Aquire The Fire thing...Lol...Dont worry LifeNRA I dont think you will have to worry about me...I will stick with W.V.

The "Fire Thing"??? Do you mean the first day of rilfe season? First day was always a favorite day of mine. I love deer hunting, never had any problems with it. My only problem is the DCNR and the PA GAME COMMISSION! They need to stop killing off all these deer. The DCNR says the forest cant handle all the deer. Well if thats the case! Then mother nature will stop producing the food the deer need. Then the forest will mature, then the deer will mature. I been to different forests all over this state. I see TONS of masts crops everywhere! This knucklehead that runs the DCNR is not a hunter so he doesnt care! All he is worried is the money they can lose from timbering. He could care less about the wildlife! Oh! I cant wait to see what HuntingPA.com is saying about this! Them people have to be going bazerk over there!!!

Re: PA Harvest count

Yep, that isn't good if they did a drive and only kicked up three deer. When my parents went to our club for breakfast there was a couple members there for the same thing and they got talkin and were saying that the deer just aren't here and it is said because what is the next generation of hunters going to have to look forward to. Heck I'm only 20 and I was thinking that there is all these woods and nothing on them. You don't know how mad I got when I heard them leaves rustling to look and see squirrels running around. To tell you the truth it's getting old to look in the same places and not see the deer there that you should be seeing. Hopefully things are banging this saturday because there are many hunters that didn't get them guess we just got to wait and see. Good luck to you all that haven't connected. Keep us all posted.

Re: PA Harvest count

i feeel everyones pain. i am out hunting non stop and cant find a buck to save my life, but its not the management program. i have seen the bucks spotlighting and on my scouting camera. they are there. but no one can find them now. they are just too darn smart the older they get. when the pressure is on they disappear. thats how they survive and thats why no one is getting any bucks or atleast any big bucks. its frustrating when you put in the kind of time that i do, but sooner or later it will pay off. i havent harvested a buck in two years, so im hoping that i can pull it off this year. you just never know what will happen when you step into the woods.

Re: PA Harvest count

I was hunting STATE GAME LANDS (Clear Creek State Forest) opening morning. Actually heard the first shot of the day at about 10 to six, what they were shooting at is beyond me, I came to the conclusion that someone either had a boo boo, or someone was shooting with the aid of a light if you get my drift.

Anyway, from sun up till a little after 1 when we left the woods there was non-stop shooting. The first couple of hours sounded like "the good old days" with shots ringing out in every direction. It gradually slowed down as the day progressed, but it never once stopped.

All in all between first light and noon we saw a total of 8 deer, 5 doe and 3 legal bucks, one 8 point came home with me. We talked to a bunch of other guys on the way out that said they were seeing deer all over but just couldn't get shots or they shot and missed. One other guy besides me that I talked to there was lucky enough to harvest something. He shot a doe at 8 am and a 9 point at 10 am, all within 75 yards of the parking area of the game lands.

Can you say, "OVER HARVESTING???" It was like that near me as well. All I can say next year will be worst than this year!

Remember guys, the game commission are not the one's taking the deer. Hunters are taking the deer. We do have some control over what happens, most of the guys complaining are still filling 2 and 3 tags.

Yeah we can only blame the super meat hunters for this one! I can see one buck and one doe, THATS IT!!!

Re: PA Harvest count

Fog and limited visibility interspersed with drizzle all day Monday and all I saw was a doe with two fawns. On Tuesday it rained all day and I saw a button buck. Wednesday and clear, cool air brought about some movement and I saw 22 deer, including a spike buck and the biggest 6 point I ever saw, which is now in my cooler. Now it's Thursday and I'm back to work. Taking the smokepole out on Saturday to see if I can shoot a doe.

Re: PA Harvest count

Our hunting group went to Clearfield County, PA to hunt state forest and state game lands. Sunday we went scouting and only saw one buck chasing a doe around. He was a high rack 6 pointer.

There were lots of hunters but hardly any shots. Opening day there was a really early shot at 6:15 by someone and then at 6:35 a coyote came charging from the direction of the shot and ran past me at 20 yards in the dark. I counted 5 shots in the morning and most were far off on another mountain and not in the area I was hunting. I didn't see a thing besides that coyote and other hunters opening morning.

The afternoon we went to another spot to find two hunters sitting where we wanted to sit so we headed up the ridge from them quite a ways and sat down. 30 minutes after sitting down a doe came running straight at me and got 100 yards and turned 90 degrees to head up the ridge more being chased by a 1 horned spike. There was a smaller deer with no visible horns following a few paces behind them that I thought was a younger doe and shot it to find out it was a button buck with horns that went straight back on his head laying against his skull that were about 2" in length and covered with fur. The doe ran up to my father and he shot her when she stopped to look back at where I shot from.

For all the camps filled with hunters around where I hunt there was very few deer hanging and the few deer hanging were all does except for a nice 6 pointer, a nice 8 pointer, and a buck with a 5" spike on one side and a fork horn on the other that a youth hunter shot.

Only three people out of eight in our hunting party that filled one doe tag each. Four people didn't see one deer at all. And another claims he saw an 8 pointer in the morning fog that disappeared.

We hunted the rest of the week in the snow while the other hunters in our group all left by Wednesday disgusted. We didn't see any sign of deer anywhere except some sets of tracks in a safety zone near where we hunted that turned out to be a group of does and a set of tracks going through some thick cover.

There were hunters doing drives and they weren't kicking anything up at all. We even had some people try to drive deer to us who didn't kick a thing out for us. Everyone around the area was pretty much disgusted about the lack of bucks and the small amount of does around to fill their freezers with. The few people that were successful with harvesting bucks shot them on opening morning. I didn't recall seeing any new bucks after opening morning hanging anywhere the rest of the week.

When driving to Elk County to see the elk we saw 1 lone big doe hiding on a ridge next to the road and on the way back from seeing the elk we saw three other does bedded next to the road behind timbered trees.

I like the horn restrictions it did produce a 6 and 8 point that was a rarity to see in this area before the horn restrictions, but I think it'd be better going to a 3 day doe hunt that is situated outside of the buck season to limit the doe harvests down some. I don't like this 2 weeks of being able to shoot does or bucks. Leads to too many does harvests out of the public lands.
