dogdoc
I nice perennial plot of clover, chicory, and trefoil makes a pretty darn good plot. All plants are attractiveand high in protein. Spring plants I like to plant cowpeas and soybeans--both are also high in protein and highly attractive. The down side to these plants is they do tend to get over browsed pretty easy if you don't plant a large enough plot. Fall planting is a good time to start your perennial plot. I also like to plant cereal grains (oats, wheat, rye), brassicas, and austrian winter peas. The cereal grains are highly attractive during the cold months and offer a lot of carbs for quick energy and heat. The brassicas and winter peas offer some high protein during the winter months as well. I have no experience with planting peanuts. Born2Hunt
Re: What to plant in the offseason?? Try planting brassica it is the only plant that has worked for me in the mid to late fall and it is 30%+ protien.
wtnhunt
Re: What to plant in the offseason?? Welcome to the forums. Have to agree with Todd here. The purple hull peas(cowpeas) would make for a good spring planting, plan on using some purple hull peas from the garden mixed with some sorghum this spring here. Have had our best results with clovers here planted in the fall too. Spring plantings of clovers just dont as well here.
bowhtr1
Re: What to plant in the offseason?? I dont know where you are located but down here the best is american jointvetch mixed with alyce clover. Since you have small plots dont bother with the soybeans they will eat them to quick. You need some big plots for that. The vetch has high protein and the deer love it. You will see deer in the plot in the middle of the day. I see alot of deer in the plots when the weather is 90 degs. That says something about the mix above. If you can use feeders in the offseason then soybeans in the feeders would help also. Soybeans have about 32 % protein to help grow them big racks. They need 18% to reach the max poteitial. The plot mix above is in the 20 to 30 % protein range. I plant mine the last week of April and bushhog it down in june to about 10 inches to allow the plot to get thick. It will also cut back on the weeds. Good luck. bowhtr1
Re: What to plant in the offseason?? I get 50 lbs at the seed and feed for about $150. The alyce clover is about $68 for 50 lbs. This will plant 20 acres if you mix it. You can buy it by the pound also at feed and seed stores. Ask them if they have it or can get it for you. I use 8 to 10 lbs mixed per acre. I also put out 100-150 lbs of a 5-20-20 fertilizer or something simular out with it and 100 lbs of lime each time. It will come back for about 3 years after with just fertilizer and lime but I always till mine and add a little more each year. But I only go with half the rate. Good luck I know you will like this mix.
