New York hunting age

I also agree with the age of 12 with the guidence and supervision of an adult and a hunter safety certificate. This would increase hunters in a state where our average hunting age is around 50. Give the kids a chance to enjoy the outdoors before they turn to the streets and they may stay out of trouble.

Not in New York, but I kind of like it here Tennessee in that respect. There is no minimum age limit, however young hunters are required to be accompanied by adults who have to be in position to take imediate control of the weapon being used. My oldest daughter killed her first deer this year at age 9.

Re: New York hunting age

Yes I agree that we need to do more to keep kids interested in the outdoors at a earlier age. Many kids throughout the country have taken some nice deer at ages WAY before NYS lets kids hunt. I think thet should drop the ages 2 years on each season.

Such as 14 to bow hunt big game...make it 12. 16 to gun hunt big game....make it 14. If DEC makes a move like that, then I will believe they are doing what they can to get kids in the woods earlier.

The saturday opener was a good start for younger kids to get out earlier, and it would've been better if DEC had a youth deer season, like they did with the youth turkey season. Let it start the week before the opening of early archery.

I am all for kids hunting as young as we can legally get them to hunt. ANYTHING That can get kids in the woods at a younger age than now I am all for.

i agree NY should lower the hunting age a little, by the age of 16 some kids are more worried about other things that possibly they should not be worried about. if a kid gets out and learns how to hunt at an early age the kid is more than likely to get hooked. I am thankful that my dad is such an avid deer and turkey hunter, because of him I have a passion for these things. even taking a kid to sit in a stand is better than nothing. i killed my first deer when i was 14 with a bow and i was hooked for life. now i understand that some kids do not bowhunt so lowering the gun age would get more kids interested sooner.

Re: New York hunting age

I have a question about what kind of rules are we envisioning when we propose a minimum legal age. Are we talking about parental supervision? Are we talking about adult supervision (If so what age is the adult)? What exactly does the "supervision" entail? Does that mean that the parent/adult needs to be within touching distance, voice distance, sight, or just somewhere on the property, or just that the parent/adult knows where the child is hunting, or just knows that the child is out hunting somewhere? I have seen current adult supervision practiced using all of the above as criteria.

So, legally, what does supervision actually entail? That certainly would make a big difference to my answer to the original message.

To me supervison needs to come from a parent if we are to let 14 year olds hunt with a gun. For example, hunting 100yds apart or close proximity. The parent should be required to escort the child to their stand.

That may be what it SHOULD be, but I am curious as to what the current regulations say about junior hunter accompanyment. Does anybody know?

Instead our State legislators recently introduced a bill that would require 250 inches of blaze orange while hunting. We don't need more regulations and laws, please! Most already wear orange, so leave my personal safety up to me. Orange during archery, no way.

I realize that this is a completely different, off-topic discussion, but it is one that I have some serious concerns about. Once again, I saw another idiot hunting a very heavily pressured chunk of state land, dressed in complete camo and face paint. Unbelievable! Personally, I really don't worry about him or his welfare. If he's too stupid to care about his well-being and the effects this could have on his family, perhaps he is a good candidate to be culled from the herd. What I do care about is the innocent hunter who may carefully scan the backdrop before shooting at a deer but still fail to see the jerk hunkered down beside a tree that is in the direct line of fire. We have all seen the Realtree commercial that shows how completely a camoflaged hunter can blend in with the background and be completely impossible to detect. I think we all also recognize that every time we shoot at a deer we do not choose a shot that involves a nice gravel backstop with all the logs and underbrush cleared out between us and the deer as well as the entire area behind like a public shooting range.

And don't think that the shooter is not traumatized by such a life altering hunting accident that was largely caused by the ignorance of some jerk that did everything but wear a buckskin suit and strap antlers on his head. I really don't get it! Are people so irresponsible that they just don't care about such things? What could possibly go through these guys heads (besides a slug) that makes them think that improving their odds of getting a deer through some rather questionable means is worth risking their life for? Is this some kind of new phenomenon known as suicide by hunting that is starting to develop?

That is the reason that I was in favor of mandating blaze orange for gun deer season. It sure will take an awful lot of convincing to make me feel otherwise.
