Guest okie
Hey guys, I mount several gameheads(whitetails) a year for friends and family as a hobby of mine. I have a question for all the full timers out there, when you measure the cape to order your forms do you measure before you skin the deer or do your measure after you have tanned your hides? If you measure after you get the hide tanned what is the easiest way to get the neck measurements? I use the small Y incision(not as much sewing) so I can't really lay the hide out flat to measure. Just curious on what some of the other taxidermist do.
RTF
Re: Question for the taxidermist I do the same skin out as you. I just measure the neck of the deer, just behind the ears after the cape is off from skull. When skinning this way be sure and to leave the meat on the skull and no on the cape as to get an accurate measurement.
rockefeller66
Re: Question for the taxidermist i usually just measure after i tan to get the most accurate measurement but i have only done a couple mounts, i would try what RTF said, i think it would work if he said so! Guest ILBIGBUCKS
Re: Question for the taxidermist try a 7 cut go from one antler burr to the other and then to the middle and down the neck to the end of the meat...then cut all the meat off of the hide and give it like 15 tugs to stretch it and measure about 4in. behind the ears...hope this works for you.
