Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: corn or milo? Either will work. Corn makes better cover, but milo is easier to grow, especially if you have a dry year.

Born2Hunt
Re: corn or milo? I want to leave the corn standing all winter. How much will the deer feed on it all winter? Which would they eat more of corn or milo?
Tominator
Re: corn or milo? One thing to consider is that milo won't take any intervention from you to feed them. Corn, you're going to have to expose the ear for them a little bit. Deer around me will pass an unshucked ear of corn, but as soon as you shuck the ear, it's gone. That has never slowed them from getting into the corn we plant here Chris. Matter of fact the only thing I have been able to do to keep them and the racoons out of it is to string electric around it. jdickey
Re: corn or milo? Milo will give year better resistance to drought, and will also provide feed for other game such as upland birds - quail, doves, and turkey.

[/ QUOTE ] They will eat the ends of the corn off when the corn is in silk, but as far as getting to the actual ear, they have a tough time, and tend to ignore it. I could easily pick a bushel of unshelled corn in my neighbor's field (waste corn that is, after the combine goes through) just about any day of the week. Of course, I'm literally surrounded by agriculture. You know how lazy deer are, they don't have to work for too many meals around here. wtnhunt
Re: corn or milo? Kind of funny really Chris. They will pick stuff up here in the yard, and I guess when the dog barks at them they run with it. We still had some pears a couple weeks ago in the yard. Found one half eaten about 200 yards from the pear tree next to a two strand electric fence, that the deer ran into, breaking the top two post insulators off, and pulling down the wire. Over the years, I have also found partially eaten ears of corn long distances away from the garden where they will take it with them on the go. Got a lot of agriculture around here too really, but it is not right next to the house.
Tominator
Re: corn or milo? I've seen squirrels with full ears of corn in their mouths hundreds of yards away from the nearest field. Looks funny them carrying an ear that's as big as them. Our deer must be lazier than your deer.
wtnhunt
Re: corn or milo? Funny you say that Chris. We had shucks and cleaned cobs hanging from the limbs of a hickory tree hanging this year right out in front of the garden. Thought about taking some pics, but never got around to it. The squirrels were about the only pests that were able to get into the corn through the fence.
LETMGROW
Re: corn or milo? Watchout for racoons also. They will drag corn cobs for miles. Deer usually eat and leave.
