wtnhunt
My daughter, will be 10 this March, wants her own rifle. Thinking about it for a Christmas gift. For the past two years now she has been shooting the savage model 10. 243 I bought my wife, and she does pretty well with it. I was considering a .223 in a semi auto or possibly a .17 hmr. Something kind of economical for her to practice with year round. I am leaning more towards the .223 because we could hunt coyotes with it. Anyone have any suggestions on any youth model rifles. AJ
Re: Youth rifles-suggestions anyone The rimfire will definately be lighter vs a centerfire. If she can carry a 223, that would be my choice. You can shoot varmints and predators all year long. Ammo is just a tad more than the 17 HMR. I am curious why the semi auto? Again, if it were me, she would be using a single shot like the H&R Handi Rifle Youth. They do have rimfire guns too in the same configuration. Another advantage is you can get extra barrels in .22 lr, 22 Magnum, and .17 Mach 2, and .17 HMR.
superguide
Re: Youth rifles-suggestions anyone The .17 has found a niche market in Canada that nobody ever invisioned-it is just about the pefect gun for shooting beaver. They are classified a nuisance animal in many places but still valuable as furbearers. All shots are under a 100 yards and a headshot beaver with a .17 has little pelt damage and doesn't get away. Guest lilcrackshot
Re: Youth rifles-suggestions anyone THe 17 HMR would do great. Get the NEF Sportster. Great gun.
wtnhunt
Re: Youth rifles-suggestions anyone [ QUOTE ] I am curious why the semi auto [/ QUOTE ] Coyotes. Faster follow ups. She always shoots supervised. Think I am probably going to go with a .223.
johnf
Re: Youth rifles-suggestions anyone I would go with this Nef 223 or the 243 in the same configuration for several reasons. 1. accuracey 2. recoil 3. weight 4. size 5. weight 6. cost-gun and ammo and did I mention weight I just don't think you can come close to the quality of the nef rifle for the money that you spend on it on any other brand. There are better guns out there for sure, but for a lot more $$
LETMGROW
Re: Youth rifles-suggestions anyone If you are planning to shoot a lot check prices of ammo. The .17 is great [i own one] but ammo is about 5 times the price of the .22. You might consider a caliber you can reload. This might get her really interested. Ask her about it. huntinsonovagun
Re: Youth rifles-suggestions anyone I would personally stay away from a semi-auto. People rely on that second and third shot WAY too much now days. Make that first one count.

wtnhunt
Re: Youth rifles-suggestions anyone She wants a deer caliber rifle. Think I have decided to go with a .243 for her, and maybe get myself a .17 hmr.

hutchies
Re: Youth rifles-suggestions anyone 7mm-.08 I think is an awsome caliber for youth hunters because they can use anything from 90 grain shell to a 140 grain.
