rifleman25
I am interested in purchasing a new rifle. The company I am going to purchase it from has only one caliber in stock, that is the 250-3000 savage. I am not a patient person so if this round isn't so good I have a similar gun from a different company in mind in a caliber I know more about. I like the appearance of the first gun better. What are your thoughts?
AJ
Re: 250-3000 savage Welcome to the forums. It can be a tricky move buying a rifle chambered for an obsolete (or very close) cartridge. As of now, Remington and Winchester still offer 250 Savage factory loaded ammo. So if you don't reload, I would suggest buying a case of ammo if you intend to shoot this gun well into the future. Its that or plan on reloading. Is the rifle a Savage 99? As far as the cartridge goes, its a decent deer gun. Savage introduced this round in 1915. It was the first cartridge to hit the 3000 fps velocity. With an 85 gr varmint bullet, it will reach 3000 fps. With the 100 gr deer loads, it churns out just over 2800 fps. It is an honest 250 yard deer gun. It would work on shots to 300 yards for behind the shoulder shots. At 300 yards the energy level drops below 850 ft/lbs. This cartridge has very mild recoil, ample power for deer sized game at most hunting distances, and is still available as factory loaded ammo. snapper
Re: 250-3000 savage I have an older Ruger M77 chambered in .250 savage....its a great shooting gun. It used to be my mothers when she hunted...very little recoil and would drop a deer just like a big center fire rifle. Like AJ stated...finding ammo is the biggest prob. unless you plan to reload. rifleman25
Re: 250-3000 savage Yes the rifle is a savage model 99 c. I do load alot of different rounds and probably would for this gun as well. I have never really liked the savage rifles but saw this oldie and fell in love with it almost instantly. AJ
Re: 250-3000 savage The 99 is a nice gun. Its the only lever action I would consider owning. If you get it lets see some pics. There are a few 99 fans that frequent this site.
Guest lilcrackshot
Re: 250-3000 savage Read Larry Koller's "Shots at Whitetails" Good classic book and Mr. Koller loves the 250-3000
rifleman25
Re: 250-3000 savage Well I did it I bought the 99 in 250 savage and the guy also shot me a nice deal on a ruger m77 chambered for 264 win mag. Needless to say I jumped all over it. I think they both will make nice additions to my collection. There is one problem, the 264 has some mild to moderate throat erosion. Is there any thing I can do about that?
AJ
Re: 250-3000 savage You have 2 options, you can: 1. Have a gunsmith cut off a turn and re-chamber the barrel. 2. Rebarrel. I would shoot the gun and see how it shoots. If its a shooter, just shoot it till the accuracy goes away, then rebarrel.
