dogdoc
Which is better for the beginner---a flute call or the short reed---and which one do you recommend for the beginner. The reason I'm asking because my wetland project will be getting under way shortly and I want to be ready with the goose call for next season. Thought I'd get one now and practice. thanks todd
boomer
Re: What goose call..... I would go with the short reed. It might be a little harder at first. You can get alot more sounds out of it than a flute. It can be hard to make the switch from a flute to a short reed. I would get Foiles meatgrinder or Zink poly pc-1 both are easy to blow and easy on the check book. Also get good a goose callin dvd like Honker Talk by Shawn Stahl. double_drop
Re: What goose call..... I would just start with a short reed and not even start on a flute. Starting off price wise buy a buck gardner hammer 2 or a hs hammer. Both sound very good. I have both of them and use them alot. I don't need the high dollar call to bring in the geese some people think that but these work just as well.
lil hunter
Re: What goose call..... I'd go for a short reed. I have a Tim Grounds Half Breed, it's a nice and easy one to use. Only costs about $50. You should also look into Winglock calls, they have several nice ones that don't cost much.
ilhunter1986
Re: What goose call..... Well some say that flutes are easier to blow. i found out that they were and bought one. After i started playing around with a short reed i found out that i could produce more realistic sounds. i purchased a winglock walnut short reed goose call. its under 50 bucks and sounds amazing. the funny thing is i tried to blow a flute and i cant do it anymore. lol
huntn4bucks
Re: What goose call..... A flute call is somewhat easier to blow than a short reed but not as versatile. If you start off blowing a flute call, you'll just have to re-learn everything when you switch to a short read...there's quite a bit of difference in blowing the two. IMO. I would go with a short reed. Which one? Not sure. I've only blown about 3-4 short reed goose calls and I'm still not real consistant with any of them. Strut10
Re: What goose call..... Lots of sound advice. If you do decide to go with a flute call.........get a Big River. Best one out there, IMHO. As for a short reed........I like the Glynn Scobey Magnum. Takes some (lots) of practice. But the results can be remarkable. Bow Hunter Derek
Re: What goose call..... Nothing wrong with a flute, but I'd recommend getting a short reed and sticking with that. Pick up a video like Honker Talk or a CD like Break Through II and practice. As for calls. Buck Gardner's Hammer 2 is a good poly call for under $25. Or I would highly recommend looking into one of the calls that Rick Perry makes under the Winglock name. Great guy and outstanding easy to blow calls. A good all around call of his is the Longneck. He's got a deal on his website for the all Hedge call shipped for $50. That is an insane price for a top end call that is super easy to blow. I have one in the Delrin and love it. There are tons of other good calls out there too. You don't have to spend $100 on a call to kill geese.
double_drop
Re: What goose call..... just bought a high dollar short reed buck gardner. Super easy to blow and sounds awesome. Very impressed. Sounds better than my half reed tim grounds.
