Squirrel dogs????

Okay. Need some help here. My son has a chihuahua that he would like to make into a squirrel dog.

He actually caught a squirrel in a trap he made and we put the squirrel in a cage. The dogs all went beserk. We have 2 chihuahuas and a Southern Blackmouth Cur pup. The older male chihuahua was VERY INTERESTED in the squirrel. He was barking and trying to jump up to the cage. ( We hung the cage in a tree) The cur dog kept jumping but she never barked. The chihuahua puppy never barked but showed a little interest.

So.....any helpful tips you can give us????

BTW,.....the squirrel escaped so he's gonna try to catch another one. grin.gif

Re: Squirrel dogs????

I don't know. The times I did hunt squirrel were just me sitting at the base of a tree waiting for something to move.

I'd say just get your dogs in the woods where there's squirrels and let them tree some. I think a lot of those dogs hunt from sight more than smell, but I really don't know.

Re: Squirrel dogs????

The cur will make a great squirrel dog. We use mountain curs to chase squirrels. With a little training, they'll do fine. You need to kill a couple squirrels and skin them out. Take the hides (tail attached) and drag them on the ground then up a tree and put them in the fork of the tree. Let the dogs try to sniff the squirrel out and "tree" it. Best way to train them I think. Also, letting the dogs chew on whatever parts of the squirrels you don't use is helpful, it ingrains a taste for them and a desire to hunt them. Best of luck.
