vagobbln
I do most of my hunting in Halifax County, VA where local ordinances don't allow rifles larger than .22 cal rimfire. What are the best options for varmits (foxes and coyotes) given these limitations? Has the .17 cal got enough pop to take down coyotes or would a .22 mag be better? If so, whats the effective range of these calibers? About the only other options, as I see it, is slugs (I deer hunt with a slug gun) or buckshot. I hate to cut down on my range that much though. Thanks.

Adjam5
Re: No rifle varmit hunting Guys...he said no larger than .22 rimfire. The .204 ruger is great, but it is still a centerfire at 4225FPS!!! YEEHAWW!! But...he's limited to rimfire...in that case I'd go with the .22mag...heavier bullet, shoots almost as flat. Just don't look to shoot beyond 100 yards without practice. Good Luck and hunt safe!

What is the effective range for those of you who have shot them? I also understand a fart at the wrong time can blow'em off line. Thanks. Guest buddy ahart
Re: No rifle varmit hunting ive shot a ground hog at 253 yards with cci tnts bullets blew his head wide open idk if it would take a yotey down but it works great for fox. vagobbln
Re: No rifle varmit hunting Finally got a response back from the Game Dept on this issue. They say either a .204 or .17 caliber (although centerfires) would be legal. One of the local ordinances said ".22 rimfire". That's what had me scratching my head. Looks like Daddy might have to buy a new rifle!

I bought a .22 Mag. It does the trick
