2nd rut?

Re: 2nd rut?

The second rut (or secondary rut) around here is basically, just a slow down of rutting activity after the peak of the major rut. It doesn't really stop and then start up again, it just continues at a slower pace, somewhat the same as it was just before the peak...you know...on one day, off the next.

Bucks will be looking for unserviced late does in oestrus, right through December around here.

I've heard guys use the term 2nd rut, 3rd rut, etc, but to me and from what I've seen, it's just a secondary rutting activity that runs on from the main rut, just not as hot, and not as heavy.

That is about the limit of my knowledge on the subject grin.gif

I believe that doe-in-oestrus scents work great after the major rut, because the bucks are tired, but still looking and wanting wink.gif.

Re: 2nd rut?

The term "rut" to me means when the majority of the doe's are in heat. This year according to my observations(in my area) that was around the 12 of November. Any Doe's that did'nt concieve will come into estrous again in 28 days. So around Dec. 10 will be the second "rut". Then around Jan. 7th will be the third and final "rut". Obviously by that time few Doe's will have failed to concieve but it does happen. Also yearlings may also come into estrous during Dec. and Jan. but good luck predicting that. With that said the "breeding season" last from Oct.(older Doe's) to Jan.(yearlings and Doe's that failed to concieve for one reason or another). Although semen levels drop off Bucks can breed all year long. Photoperiodism is the #1 controling factor when Doe's come into estrous and all the other variables just influence it somewhat. The moon definately affects Whitetail behaviour but does not determine breeding as some outdoor writers would have you believe.

Do not underestimate the power of the 2nd rut as it is for real.

Feel free to hash on my comments as I am always willing to learn about this fascinating subject.

Re: 2nd rut?

Hey Tominator, I hunt Lorain County and I barely saw any signs of the 1st Rut. Do you think it was because most of the activity happened at night, becasue of our poor weather we had. Wonder if the 2nd Rut will be any better.

I hunt in Portage and Geauga counties, and I saw a lot of chasing real early, but I didn't see much rut action this year. I think the warm weather had a lot to do with it. Fall '05 was bad for hunting and fishing IMO, all due to warm weather.
