sureshot
up here in sask I get to hunt alot in the cold and always thought that the coyotes were more hungry but I have come to the conclusion after yesterday that that is not the only reason, as I was calling with my open reed call in -29 and close to -40 with the windchill I was sort of shiverign as I called and it was giving a super raspy sound! I called 14 stands and seen coyotes on 13 of them, I wish I had a buddy to set downwind but i did as good as I could and shot 5,2 were mangy , 3 were super hides,I also had one at 60 yards and the firign pin froze up , and could not get a shot, I stopped at a ranchers and seen if he had anythign to clean the oil out[oil it in the spring to store it and forgot to clean out good before it got cold]he did not so I jsut blew it out with the air hose, worked good all afternoon till right before dark when it froze up on a standign yote at 150 yards were it would not shoot! then I was stupid watchign one come in from a good 1/2 mile away like on aleash, crested a knoll at 50 yards and I put the crosshairs on chest and boom, I look to my right and 40 yards behind the coyote another one was runnign away,[in a ditch could not get a shot] if I was thinking I owuld fo seen the second one and shot it first and had this one at 100 yards runnign away! then on another stand watched 4 come for nearly a mile like on a leash, but as they got within 400 yards they started to circle and got to a hill 300 yards to my left, that was the only hill I did not want them to go to, they had the truck 50 yards below them in a valley, I coudl not shoot couse of a farm behid the hill, had a couple that came for a look but would not come in , but all in all a super day, had 21 or 22 coyotes respond to the call in one way or another, and if I was thinkign right and gun workign coudl of had 8 or 9, not bad for a day!Plus to top it off it was the day after deer season ended and they are spooked from all the shots!!anyways I am up to 28 good hides and have had at least 7 with mange and 2 more that were split up to bad to repair and one more that was matted, close to 40 coyotes in a month not to bad for just 5 days off work[mostly deer huntign] and 3 days just for coyote huntign and a few nights after work!I did manage to get 2 coyotes on film but tha batteries just do not hold up in the cold weather,I had a 5 hour battery and it lasted 2 stands prob not 1/2 hour in the cold!! if the weather holds up i should be able to break the 100 mark easilly by the end of jan !! BTW I have a bunch of pics I will post when I get developed, the digital froze up on me also and I lost all the pics couse the camera went dead!! sureshot
Re: finally figured it out!!! -30 with no wind is the best time to hunt coyotes,I dress in 2 pair of long underware, insulated underware, pants, shirt, sweatshirt, insulated jacket with tail to protect back, jacket, then white coveralls, then have good gloves and whole face mask! you are very warm usually till you have one coming in close and take the glove off for a minute or so and your fingers get a bit froze! biggest thing with cold weather huntign is not to have the heater blaring in the truck between stands, I usuualy call one stand and then drive to a new area and stay in the truck for at least 15 minutes with heater on med, do not want it to warm or you will sweat up and get really cold, Its not as bad as you think, dressed ok and prepared and it can be some of the best action in the world!sunday was one of the best days I ever had even though i did not beat my record of 9 coyotes in a day I did call alot in ! Things went alittle different and I coudl of but that is huntign!!!
