David_218
If I aquired a muzzle loader today, just days before Deer Season, I wouldn't use it this year at all. You need to really get to know your M/L in terms of what's the BEST load and most important learning how to load it and shoot it accurately. I'd spend this year getting use to using a M/L and hunt with it next season. My $.02 worth of advice.
ZooBear
Re: New guy with some simple questions Welcome to the sport and congrats on the new gun! First off, your gun will work fine. I would forget about pellets and use loose powder. You can adjust your load for your gun much easier. I would start out with about 90 grns and work up 5 grns at a time until you find the right load. Read BlueElks advice at the begining of this chapter and you will learn alot. Keep your ranges short this first year until you get comfortable with the new gun. Good luck! johnf
Re: New guy with some simple questions I would use 100gr 777 it's easier to clean. Keep your shots under 75 yards and you won't have to worry about your optimum load. Use your red dot if your used to it and can get it mounted (I don't think you can on that model unless it's (ths scope) on regular rings). You can get CVA scope rings at Wal-Mart for less than $10. If you can't mount the red dot, I would use the open sights and keep the shots under 50 yards. I would shoot as much as possible between now and whenever your going to hunt. If you can keep shots on a pie plate at 50 yards you should be ok, but I wouldn't be trying for any fancy shots. When you have more time try different powder charges and different bullets for your optimum combination. You should be good to 150-200 yards with the best shooting conditions. ilhunter1986
Re: New guy with some simple questions shot pellets with 100 grns so much easier when out in the field. also i use a 240 grn sabot and i can get out and touch the plate at 200 yrds. i personal use a simmons 3-9x40 scope so i dont know about the red dot. good luck
too_pointer
Re: New guy with some simple questions Good advice, and welcome to the forums DBak Muzleloaders are different and require some experiementing to find what loads your gun likes. I use 777 pellets and powerbelt bullets. that doesn't mean your gun gun will shoot them good. Mike
NEMOdeerhunter
Re: New guy with some simple questions I too am new too the sport, I dont know about the model you have but I bought a CVA wolf $129 at wal mart. I started with 130gr of pellets(2 50's and a 30 gr)These are the regular pyrodex, ive never seen any 777 pellets in 30 gr but they might make them. This is the only load I have tried and it shoots great at 100 yds.
wtnhunt
Re: New guy with some simple questions Welcome to the forums and to muzzleloading. Might check out the post in here "bluelks muzzleloading chapters". Some great information there. You will have to work up a load and see what will work best with your setup. With my scoped black diamond shooting 120 grains of loose pyrodex powder and a 240 grain tc xtp mag, I would not hesitate to take a shot out to 150 yards on a deer. LETMGROW
Re: New guy with some simple questions Don't let anyone mislead you. This is far from rocket science. Read the instructions you got with the gun, load it up with a basic load and fire away. You'll probably have to adjust the sights a little, but this is no different than any other firearm. Get together with a couple experienced buddies and have fun. Good Luck.
