They are decent guns. I have its predecessor the 742 in 30-06. And its a decent gun, not great but decent. I got it for a good price, so I jumped on it. I would advise the same. If you can get it for a good price, get it.

I have hunted for quite sometime with 7400's. 30-06 carbine and .308 rifle. Both are good shooters, maybe the .308 a little better. I have had one jamb with the .06 which I blame myself for. The .308 never a problem. Shorter action probably lends itself to less chance of a cycling problem in extreme cold. Keep it clean, properly [not overly] lubed and I'm sure you won't have any problems.

I personally prefer the pumps but the autos are great. Reliable, low-recoil, generally accurate. Can't ask for much more in a good deer gun.
