Turkeygirl
Well it is late in the shotgun season if NY. I know there are still some bucks around, just not seeing them. If I get home early enough today, I was thinking of going to a stand deeper in the woods and/or kind of stalk hunt my way through the woods. Anyone have any suggestions? It seems like the deer aren't moving until near or at dark....
Guest buckifan21
Re: Late season...snow..how to hunt? when the snow is on i like to sneak my way along the tops of ridges. i have noticed that the deer like to utilize the flat right beneath the top of the ridge. i just slip along the tops and watch the flats beneath me for deer. obviously you have to move slow and be quiet. you also have to watch your outline against the sky. make sure you have a good backdrop behind you. watch for others hunters and good luck! Missed160
Re: Late season...snow..how to hunt? As the weather gets cold, the #1 thing deer are thinking about is food. You have to figure out what they are eating. Late season, their food options become less & Less, so chances are, if you see one deer, you're going to see a bunch. I would set up either on food, or on the way to food, the colder the better, as they need to feed more to keep warm..
firefighter
Re: Late season...snow..how to hunt? Find food sources and hit those trails leading to and from, also look for them along slopes with exposure to the sun throughout most of the day. I've found from scouting that they will hit the spots exposed to the sun during those brutually cold days....... If its windy and the temps are really cold, look in the hollars where there is less wind ......
beagleboy
Re: Late season...snow..how to hunt? Try to find a food source. The 2nd rut is coming up and I already saw three scrapes in the snow.

[ QUOTE ] I was thinking of going to a stand deeper in the woods and/or kind of stalk hunt my way through the woods. [/ QUOTE ] Your thinking right TG. They stop using the fields once they get covered in snow and relay on browsing in the bush on twigs, grasses etc ....go for it.
Ravin R10 man
Re: Late season...snow..how to hunt? Try the oaks if you have any..acorns are high on the list right now.. get between bedding aresa and food sources
rockefeller66
Re: Late season...snow..how to hunt? ya, the deer this time of year are pretty noctornal and smart, gotta be careful and move in a little deeper but the deer are quite wise now
Jimfrompa
Re: Late season...snow..how to hunt? Another good spot would be where there are beach trees neer bedding areas. I've seen where deer dig threw 2' of snow to get to beach nuts. If the snow is quiet still hunt the ridges and take your time and glass the woods before yoy make a move. Ridges that protect them from the north wind and has the sun most of the day are ideal spots also. GOOD LUCK!!!
6sixpoint_nobrows
Re: Late season...snow..how to hunt? welp i would get in the timber as early as i could, then find an area that has a food source near, if you can just set up on a good trail deep into the woods, then just stay warm and wait, that seems to be the best thing you can do late in the season..when its brutal cold the deer dont really want to move, but when its cold, like about 25 degress the deer move hard. thats what i have noticed mainly here in Il..best of luck to you
