BS Poachers.....Gonna Kill someone

I came up to the ranch last night to get ready for a buddy coming to hunt wednesday from Illinois. I put out the corn as the snow storm is on the way. About 9 I hear a shot by the barn. I grab my coat and jump in my car, as I hit the barn gate there is a guy dragging a deer to the road and a truck waiting, I get my 9mm out and chamber a round. ( I have a concealed Carry permit in OK). The guy sees me and drops the deer and runs toward his truck, I am going about 75 at this time heading that way. I had told the landowner I was talking to at the time to call the sherrif and get him quick. I can hear the sirens on the highway and I guess the guys can too. I get to the truck as they guy jumps in and they start to run. I am on the phone with 911 chasing these guys when I see another truck off the road in the trees with its lights off, well the poachers dont know that the cops come to the house from the way they are headed!!! I go ahead and chase them to the highway where there are 2 HYPO's waiting for them, I turn around and get back to the deer about the same time the 2nd truck is sitting empty and the guy is trying to drag the buck to it. I pull on him and hit a spotlight out to him, tell him to drop it and put his hands up. he does, and by this time a 3rd hypo is coming down the road. He gets there and I put my 9mm back in the car, he cuffs the guy and that guy says on the way into the car that he was just driving along and saw the deer and was just looking at it.

Anyway, they are all in holding as of last night and they think they may have some other charges to bring against them. My buddy and his 2 brothers that own the land are attorneys, so the DA is their buddy and I think they are going to get it bad!

The deer.....as you all are probably wondering....He was a huge 12 pointer that will score about 176" roughly. I will get the rack after trial if it goes to trial., not the way I wanted to get it, but at least the hypo's and wildlife guys are being cool.

me...I was so pumped on adrenaline last night that I didnt sleep much. I did go sit in a stand this morning and saw my old buddy the triple drop tine bugger, he is dead as of thursday morning if he shows back up....

I will update as I know progress.

Re: BS Poachers.....Gonna Kill someone

Cool.

I will caution you though that chasing poachers and pulling guns on people when you don't have a badge or you are not protecting your life and property is questionable grounds. In GA, even with a CCP, you have to do everything in your power to avoid the fight. If that second dude had charged you and you shot him, you likely would have faced charges. I don't think that dragging a dead deer to a truck would be grounds to use deadly force.

Also, here in GA a homeowner who had his house and property vandalized by some prankster kids got in his car and chased them. They crashed and someone died--can't remember if it was some of the kids or innocents. He went to jail and will pay the rest of his life.

I'm glad you caught them but be careful. Maybe getting a description of the vehicle and following from afar while on the phone with the cops is the best remedy.

Perhaps a warning sign to poachers .... sort of a neighborhood watch warning might prevent a lot of that.

Re: BS Poachers.....Gonna Kill someone

Man, that sucks that they killed that 12 pointer. At least you were there and they got caught. I bet their hearts were beating a lot faster than yours. LOL I hope they get prosecuted to the fullest extent.

I had a similar experience last season. I was coming down the road to my grandparents house at 5:30am and saw a truck (with trailer) parked on the side of the road by my grandpa's corn field with the headlights on. I didn't stop, but picked up my cell phone to call my uncle who is a game warden and lives on that road. As soon as I started dialing, I passed him coming down the road doing about 60 mph. He had heard the shot while drinking his coffee. Two guys had shot at a deer in the field - and missed! LOL They were searching for blood in the field when he got there. What a bunch of idiots.

Re: BS Poachers.....Gonna Kill someone

we had the same problem, knew the poachers truck was parked on the road and we just sat there and watched them until they came out and luckily they didn't come off our property that night but instead the neighbors. we call the DNR and told them the problem and little did we know they had been wathcing the poachers and doing a sting on them for over a week now! They caught them!

Re: BS Poachers.....Gonna Kill someone

Why to go Brad.

It's good that you got on the phone quickly and got things rolling before you got too brave...LOL You could have gotton yourself into trouble.

But on the other hand, I see no reason why we hunters can't make a citizens arrest in cases like this.

Good to see some more poachers caught, that's for saure. grin.gif

Re: BS Poachers.....Gonna Kill someone

I am not mr vigillany by any means, but if they are on my property, its on. I know all the cops and hy-pos in town, they all know me too. That is the benefit of a small town. The guys were released on bail, but have a court date soon with charges to follow.

I will keep you posted.

Good job bro. I would have done the same. Cops seem to be pretty cool about CC issues when you are stopping a crime. Stories like this make these jerks think twice.
