fisherguy
Well after extreme cold, and hunting hampering my eforts to get out i finally got out with my dad today. Went splake fishing(sterile lake trout/speckled trout hybrid) becaue I had a craving for some trout, and lake trout season is closed till Jan. 1st. It was supposed to be -9, sunny, and calm...it was -12, windy, and snowing...oh well the fish were biting. It was hard on the hands because they were always wet from landing fish, and the wind made them cold. We caught about 20 and kept our limit of 10 in about an hour and a half. We ended up keeping a few small ones because we ran out of minnows, and they just don't bite well without minnows. Next time we will have to bring more, we didn't think they had stocked it this year, but they had so we had to catch a lot of 8-10 inchers to get to the nice 12-18 inch fish. Lost two at the hole that were both in the 20-22 inch range. I was surprised there was a solid 10 inches of ice. This is a deep lake, and froze over late, but with less snow on it than the lakes that froze early it is making ice really fast in the -20 to -30 weather we have been having. Here are some pictures of the fish, the fillets, and later I will post some of them cooked and ready to eat. lol I forgot to take a picture of the spot we were fishing, but picture steep solid rock shoreline with jack pine and spruce trees all over it. These eat really well, but i still can't wait to get out and catch some 10 or 20 pound lakers.

Still probably have a few weeks until good safe ice here in Ohio as long as the temps stay the way they have been.

fisherguy
Re: Ice fishing sucess pics. [ QUOTE ] good looking pink fillets there how deep were you fishing [/ QUOTE ] The lake is about 85 feet deep, but most of the fish are near structure(either tight to shore, or on a rock pile) in 6-15 feet. The annoying thisng is finding out what level they are at each day. One day they are on the bottom in 15, the next suspended half way up, and the next, on bottom in 6 or 7 feet. Thats part of the fun though i guess.

Turkeygirl
Re: Ice fishing sucess pics. Wow, nice catch! The meat in those fish is beautiful! When I was in the Adirondacks this summer, I was fishing a lake that had landlocked salmon and lake trout in it. I was hoping for a lake trout but no luck but I did catch two landlocked salmon and froze them until I got home to share with the family. They were the best fish ever and the flesh looked almost as orange as your fish!
