Re: Spinning Wings

I use spinning wing decoys and personally don't think they're over rated. I have success with them and will continue to use them as long as they are legal...some states have banned the use of spinning wing decoys. With that said, I don't think they are full proof either. By the time most ducks migrate this far south, they've literally seen hundreds of spinners and know what they are. My experience tells me that spinning wing decoys work best during the first 30-45 minutes of shooting light. They work good at other times too but first shooting light seems to be the best for me.

As far as cost, buy a Winduk or some kind of spinner that's not motorized. They are a whole lot cheaper and a heck of a lot lighter. The Sportsman Guide on eBay has Winduks for $14.97 plus $5.99 shipping. Most places sell them for about $25. You'll need to buy a 1/2" diameter piece of conduit but you'll have about $25-$30 in the whole setup.

Good luck.

Re: Spinning Wings

I've had a spinner duck for 4 or 5 years. They can be deadly. However, each year I find myself using it less and less, mostly because it is just one more thing to drag into the field.

Like huntn4bucks said, they are awesome the first half hour or so of shooting time. After that, they seem to loose their effectiveness. A lot of ducks see hundreds of these as they migrate.

I used mine one time for hunting ducks in a corn field and it was very deadly. For whatever reason, the ducks seem to like the motion in the fields.

I can't speak for the wind activated ones. I'd say that they would work fine, so long as you have wind to run them.

Spinners are like any other gizmo we use. They are a tool that works sometimes and destroy a hunt other times.

Re: Spinning Wings

We use them but find ourselves using them less and less with each passing year. At first light they're helpful but later sometimes cause a glare and flare ducks.

We've got the expensive Mojo and the remote to it and it is A PILE!! money down the drain. . . .

We got a couple of the $99 lucky ducks when Galyans went out of business for about $50, plastic wings and remotes included. Have yet to have one mess up on us. . . . . dont fall into the 'gotta have a mojo' craze cause the lucky ducks are more dependable in my book not to mention you can find them at wally world for about 100 bucks!

Re: Spinning Wings

For the most part up here they don't work as well as they used to. Everyone has at least four now. We have quit using them and the people that used to be crappy duck hunters then bought the spinner turned into supposedly expert duck hunters are not back to crappy duck hunters because the ducks are getting so used to them here that they flair about 50 yards out and they people become skybusters as well. We still do use them on the little ponds away from other people and they work well.
