huntinsonovagun
Not sure where to post this, since it is a general hunting question..... Anyway, who has one? I'm thinking about making one!! Would be pretty cool I think! Let's see some pictures and relative description of how you made it! (not too deep in detail, as I wouldn't want you writing a book...I get the drift on how most are made...) Let's see some pics!
AdvantageTimberLou
Re: Ghilli suits....... Be safe in it, guy here in Michigan died in his, then again he tried smoking while wearing it. Thing caught fire fast and he died as a result. I assume you won't be smoking while wearing it but be careful. Strange things happen. I would think you could "google" the internet and find some good instructions!! Good luck on becoming a "bush!" LOL!!
huntinsonovagun
Re: Ghilli suits....... LOL....those cigs seem to find SOME way to kill you!! Good thing I don't smoke. (Never even tried it!!!! ................well except for one time, kinda. Striker on the outdoor grill was broke, so we lit it with a rolled-up piece of notebook paper. One day I noticed the smoke that came through the end of that rolled up notebook paper and tried to smoke it. Took one puff of that notebook paper and that was enough for me!!! Young and dumb....good times.... )

VTbowman
Re: Ghilli suits....... Here is the one I made. I used an old Mossy Oak 3D leafy suit I had. It was all netting with the die cut leaves senw to it by the factory. I took 2 old military camo shirt of mine, woodland and dessert, and cut them into 4"x8" patches. I then took the patches and cut 1/2" to 1" wide strips down then leaving it together at one end. I sewn that end to the suit but only in the corners of each "patch". I did not "gillie" the lower legs so you can see the difference between the 3D leafy and the gillie I added. I also left the entire inside of the left arm (my bow arm) undone and even cut away the 3D stuff too. I did not over lap it mush at all and left quite a bit of room between each patch so the 3D leaves could still add camo too. That way mine is not so blasted hot to wear. VtBowhunter
Re: Ghilli suits....... Shawn, is that the one you wore here for turkey season? You should also get a pic of your shotgun after you Ghillied that up too. That was one of the best camo'd shotguns I've ever seen.

LOL I am saving that pic for a turkey harvest though so I need to book my trip with you now...

Hoosierbuck
Re: Ghilli suits....... One quick and dirty method for making a pretty good ghillie is to buy a bunch of burlap fabric in brown, mostly, but some green, too. Cut it into strips about 18" long or so, then hot glue them to an army style "jacket" which is really the over shirt. Then take it to the laundry-mat and put it through a wash and dry to fray it up...good to go! Learned that from a SWAT sniper, so it must be good, right? HB [/ QUOTE ] How well does the hot melt hold up to the drier and time? The easiest way I've heard of if it holds up, think I might test it out. Nice suit vtbowman, last year I jerry rigged(no offence jerry ) a ghilli hat and head net to break up my head and shoulders for turkey hunting. I was amazed at the difference in their reaction or lack of to me, even caught out in the open.
Hoosierbuck
Re: Ghilli suits....... Hey Waterloo boy (grew up in Des Moines, myself)- The guy that showed me had his "in service" for a long time, and the rattier it gets, the better. Of course, you don't get as many SWAT call outs as days hunting. Naturally, a good bit of the cross pieces of the burlap comes off, leaving the long strings, but that's just the way it is, and why you don't put it in the home laundry machines. If you develop a hole in the camo, then you could always just add more strips of burlap. HB
Stinger-Hunter
Re: Ghilli suits....... Hoosier Buck, What do you mean by hot glue? Literally, get a glue gun? Is there a type of glue to get or just the standard? Thanks, Louie
Hoosierbuck
Re: Ghilli suits....... Yes, just a regular hot glue gun. I don't know if there is a "better" type of glue, I just used whatever I had laying around. When you go to put the strips on the coat, lay them like you are doing shingles-row by staggered row, starting at the bottom. If you are going to bow hunt in it, leave the inside of the left arm (for righties) and the chest pretty clean, or your fuzz will get caught in the string. VTbowman
Re: Ghilli suits....... Hot glue is what my manager said to use too. He was in the British Special Service and has made a few of them. Its fast and easy to repair. I sewn mine for longjevity and I was not usinf\g burlap. I used my old military issued uniform shirts. believe me mine is real rugged and the hot glue is the way to go if you dont want to sew for 3 days like I did. Phew that sucked. iabow
Re: Ghilli suits....... Glad to meet a fellow native, even if you are from Des Moines LOL. Have some family down there. Thanks for the idea guys. Going to try to make one for the spring turkey season. I'll see how well it holds up to my abuse to it, might have to sew for three days .
