Norm Sauceman
Re: PISTOL HUNTING I have a 629 classic with the 8" barrel in SS 44Mag. I have shot it a few times but never hunted with it. I hope to soon though.
VTbowman
Re: PISTOL HUNTING I am in the process of putting together a 7mm.08 Encore pistol with a Burris 3-12x32 scope. I just won the scope on Ebay and ordering the gun in about a month. I figured I would take the winter to pay for it and build it then have all spring and summer to get "good" with it. LOL I plan to replace my rifle hunting with this rig. I also plan a ML barrel for it too. How fun would that be to take a deer with a ML pistol!!!??? TxAgJeepr
Re: PISTOL HUNTING Love to pistol hunt. The excitement of getting as close as you do with a bow plus the confidence of getting a clean kill shot. Dropped a doe earlier this year with my Python and am going pig hunting with it tomorrow. Life is good.
Rayzorp
Re: PISTOL HUNTING I've been wanting to get into it for a while, I just can't make up my mind on the pistol, I was looking at an Ecore 06 caliber,, any tips would greatly appreciated
wyote
Re: PISTOL HUNTING I've been full time pistol hunting since 1986. I've used XP 100's, T/C condtenders and encores, and savage strikers. Wheel guns made by Ruger, S&W, and Freedom Arms in 44 mag, 45 colt, and 454 casull. I've taken everything from gophers to a moose with handguns. I LOVE HANDGUN HUNTING!!!!!!
VTbowman
Re: PISTOL HUNTING [ QUOTE ] I've been wanting to get into it for a while, I just can't make up my mind on the pistol, I was looking at an Ecore 06 caliber,, any tips would greatly appreciated [/ QUOTE ] The best tip I have gotten so far is to go to www.handgunhunt.com and read threw the forum. One thing I have learned is that a meduim recoil shells in a rifle is fairly stout recoil in a handgun so 30.06 has some major recoil if your just starting out. 243 or 7mm.08 are good hunting handgun calibers for a newby (like me). The Encore is an excellent choice since you can upgrade later to larger calibers at will by just buying a new barrel. I am going with the 7mm.08 Encore myself. hangunnr
Re: PISTOL HUNTING I wish I'd have kept records as to all the different gun / caliber combinations I've used over the years. I kinda got away from it for awhile but find myself getting wound up about chasing critters with the short guns again. Congrats on the deer and WELCOME to the Realtree forums. hangunnr
hangunnr
Re: PISTOL HUNTING [ QUOTE ] I was looking at an Ecore 06 caliber,, any tips would greatly appreciated [/ QUOTE ] I think an Encore in '06 is a bit much for a first hunting handgun. You are going to have a very stout kicker there. If I were you I'd start with something with a little less power. A caliber such as .243 Win, 260 Rem or 7-08 would be a better choice IMO. hangunnr
WNY_Whitetailer
Re: PISTOL HUNTING I've been carrying my Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter in 44Rem Mag for the past two seasons...I have yet to drop the hammer on a deer with it but that day will come soon enough. Guest ftw46
Re: PISTOL HUNTING This is my fifth year of handgun only during firearms season. I usually start out with one pistol and if I take an animal I switch to something else. We have a 12+ deer limit and a 2 1/2 month season in Georgia so I have a lot of time to hunt. Three deer is the maximum I ever take as this is all I need for the year. My weapons are: T/C Contender stainless 14" 7-30 Waters Ruger Redhawk Stainless 7.5 .41 Mag 7 1/2" Ruger Blackhawk Blue open sights .41 Mag 4 5/8 S&W 29 44 Mag Blue, open sights 4"
