huntinsonovagun
Re: Opinions You wanting to save the furs??? I'm hearing some NASTY stuff about the .204. Buddy has one, but hasn't had any kills as of yet!! We're both chomping at the bit to see what she'll do! Not sure if I'd want to shoot a big hog with tusks with a .204 though!!! .22-250 could be a good one for ya! Just put it in the right place on a hog!! AJ
Re: Opinions The 375 Remington Ultra Mag would do the trick. Something to save hides and have enough power to shoot hogs?? Get a pair of guns. Raccoons are not hard to kill. I always used a 22 lr. For coyotes I like the .17 Remington (centerfire) and up. For hogs, I like the standard deer cartridges. Guest ronin
Re: Opinions I now use a 243 WSSM for varmits, deer, and hogs. I was a little worried about the hogs, initially, but there was no reason. With the correct load, the 243 WSSM will really pack a wallop. My son dropped a pig in it's tracks with my 243 and it's didn't twitch afterwords. I took my first deer this year with it and was extremely impressed with the performance. My deer/ hog load is a 243 Barnes X-Bullet Triple Shock. Velocity comes close to 3500 fps. IMO, this bullet is superb. My varmit bullet is the 58 gr Barnes X-Bullet in VLC. I have a lot of friends that use the standard 243 cartridge as well as the 6mm. Similar performance as the WSSM though you get a little more size and weight with the long gun. I could be wrong but there also seems to be a little less perceived recoil with the WSSM.
hutchies
Re: Opinions You guys must be shooting steroid hogs or something. I know people that hunt them with 22 mags. They shoot them in the ear. Down at the lease I have seen some shot with a .243 and most of the time they don't run farther than 50 yards before they kill over. [/ QUOTE ] In the place I used to hunt hogs, a rimfire was as useful as a cap gun. The closest we ever saw a hog was just over 200 yards. With 6" of grass as the cover anywhere, you can't sneak up on them. It was long distance shooting. So, yes deer cartridges were the norm. I do not take or advise head shots on game other than using a shotgun for turkeys.
hutchies
Re: Opinions I personally use the .30-06 for pretty well all big game/hogs/yotes. I shoot everything right behind the shoulder. That is the way my father taught me to shoot and that is where my kids will be taught t shoot. Even when I bowhunt hogs I carry a pistol. Around here hogs are normally within 50 yards when you shoot them. I have never used a rim fire for hogs and do not endorse it at all. Guest Rolngthun
Re: Opinions If you like to shoot as well as hunt. I would suggest checking into a .223. You buy shooting ammo for pennies. Just a thought.

johnf
Re: Opinions 223 is cheap to shoot, easy on the shoulder and decent power.
snapper
Re: Opinions .220 swift is a good cal. but harder to find ammo for than a .22-250 or .223. I too would lean towards a .243 or a .25 cal.
Shaun_300
Re: Opinions I really like my .22-250 for varmints, with the reloads we shoot and the 6-18x scope on it, as long as you have a decent rest to support the heavy barrel, they don't stand a chance. I think the .22-250 would be a good choice for the game you'll be hunting. I'd get it in a Remington 700.
