vagobbln
Have any of you gone through the procedure of lapping your barrel as mentioned in the Muzzleloader 101 article (Bluelk's)? Can you see a difference? Does a new gun need to be "shot in" before you do it? Just curious. Sounds like a good off season, rainy day project if you get results. too_pointer
Re: Lapping? I lapped my Encore barrel according to the directions in the 101 article, but I did it before it was ever fired. I used NAPA'S grease mix valve grinding compound to do my Encore. All I know is it is very accurate and cleans very easily. It does take awhile to do it right but I believe it is worth the effort too_
VTbowman
Re: Lapping? Hmmm thats pretty interesting stuff. I wonder if this is good for a handgun too? I would think it would help any type of rifled barrel. What if its an older barrel, and you do the cotton ball test with no fibers left behind. Still do this lapping reguardless? AJ
Re: Lapping? Personally, I do not recommend doing it. Therte is no way in blazes I would do that to one of my guns. I presently have 8 different muzzleloaders and have gotten rid of 3 others. Out of these 11 muzzleloaders I have not had a huge problem getting below the 2" groups at 100 yards. Most of them will go below 1.5" at 100 yards. Some even below 1", but I have never seen the need to sand the interior or a barrel. This is one area that Bluelk and I part(ed) drastically on opinions. About the only time I could see the need is if it was shredding the sabots and not giving any kind of grouping. I prefer lapped barrels, but they need to be lapped prior to being installed on the action.
LETMGROW
Re: Lapping? Sure got to go with AJ on this one! Man if we all could improve what the gun makers sent out this easily, what a wonderful world it would be. Just picking up some lapping compound and attacking a barrel sounds a little scarry to me. Unless anyone had access to precision measuring equipment and a vast knowledge of how to use it he would be ill advised to start trying to fit a rifle barrel. If you think your barrel is too tight, grind down the bullet! At least you won't ruin a perfectly good firearm.
