I blew it......

I took the afternoon off yesterday to hunt. The deer are really running here in central Ohio, my timing was perfect. I got to my stand about 2:50pm, climbed up and noticed two deer feeding my way, about 50 yards out. I have a doe tag, so I pulled my bow up real slow and nocked an arrow. As they got closer, I could tell they were button bucks. We don't shoot buttons around here, so they passed by while I finished getting my gear together. About an hour later, I noticed a decent 8 pointer in the field with his nose to the ground. That makes me feel good, the deer are moving with plenty of light left. A few does start feeding in the picked corn field below me. Then a few more in the rye field I overlook as well. At 5:15, I see a buck at the far end of the corn field, I grab my binos. THE MAN! A heavy 10 pointer with a wide spread, a no doubter. I grunt to him twice, he stops and looks in my direction. He checks the does in the field, they wern't in yet as he left them alone. He cuts through a fencerow seperating the two fields and hits my hot doe scent trail. I catch him 50 yards out, with his nose to the ground, coming my way.....

Now at this point, I have my taxidermist on the line, telling him to make room, I am bringing him a big one. I got my buddy Tominator on the line as well, calling for help to drag him out. I knew I was going to get a shot, and it was going to be close.

He walked right up to me, I am at full draw, waiting for him to turn a little or walk a little farther. 10 yards. He is quartering to me, then turns enough for a shot. I settle my 20 yard pin right under his chest and release. My arrow went right where I was aiming, an inch under him!! He bolts about 30 yards away, stands and looks around. He starts stomping his foot and blowing, looking the opposite direction. Then he slowly walks off. Gone.

10 pointer with 10-12" G2's, some heavy mass, and a 20" plus spread. Gone. Missed him at 10 yards.

What can I say? He'll be back......I hope........

Re: I blew it......

i actually held up my conference with my son's 5th grade teacher last night to hear this story. she was looking at me like "come on, it's your turn." i actually gave her the "hang on, one minute" gesture. this was important, lol.

i actually lost a little sleep over the story Tom. does that make you feel any better? no? hmmmm.

well, i told Tom that if that deer ever wanders by me i will pass him up, and i'm totally honest, there are bigger things in life than huge deer. not many, but there are some. grin.gif

well, turns out the Tom told the landowner and i'm not allowed back on the land anyway, so it's a moot point. -----> grin.gif<----

i think we'll see him again buddy. i'm sure jason or ryan will get a crack at him. grin.gif

Re: I blew it......

You're not the only one. I missed a doe at about 15 yds on Saturday morning. I caught movement to the left and in front of me just before 7am. I stood up, got my bow and got ready. There were 4 deer, one spike and 3 does. The spike came right behind my stand and I passed on him. He was running the doe and she was awfully skiddish which made me skiddish too. He got close to her and she bolted right out in front of my stand and stopped. I had my bow up but was fumbling around trying to get my eyeball and the peepsight aligned. I thought I had her in my sights but rushed things too much. I did get to take home some leaves and dirt. Not sure how I'm gonna cook them though. This is the 1st animal I've missed with my bow. I guess I got caught up in the moment and took a bad shot because I was afraid she wouldn't stand in front of me long. Lesson learned but I'm really irritated at myself right now. I went out this morning and evening and didn't see anything. Rifle season opens this Saturday so I'm sure I will score on something. The acorns are super thick now but I've got a great foodplot for the late bow season. I can't wait. As my good friend Dale tells me "You can't kill deer sitting in the living room" (at least not mine). Good luck all.
