NYBUCK
Re: 2006 Competition scores Last week shot my fist 3-D of the year in the pouring rain. 40 targets shot 372 out of 400. Yesterday shot my second shoot, 30 targets, and shot a 270 out of 300. This shoot was a little tougher but I felt I shot pretty good. Tony
Re: 2006 Competition scores thats pretty good shooting for your first 3D.. 28 down.. not bad at all. what was the scoring ? 10, 8, 5 ? Shoot Strong Tony
NYBUCK
Re: 2006 Competition scores Yep that was the scoring Tony. The 2nd one they were keeping track of 12's hit, but they never told me. I had a bunch of them. Most shoots around here you have to shoot at least 6 at each club to be eligible for a trophy and they take the highest score. MCH
Re: 2006 Competition scores Had a rough first half today. Started the tournament out on target 25 and proceeded to hit 7 eights in my first 10 targets! Here's the breakdown: If you take out those first 10 targets and I had one heck of a tournament. This course has a history of being tough. It's rare for a hunter class participant to shoot up. I've personally shot a 285 here, but not at the Open stakes. The 271(X'd a mulligan) was my personal best at the Open stakes. And that just ticks me off. To start off so bad and then only to end up at a personal best!! Oh, well. Maybe I can learn something from this in order to never go through it again.
Tony
Re: 2006 Competition scores nice looking score card. did you make them up Kevin or is that an actuall card you got at that tourny. i shot pretty nasty last weekend. 374 with 9 11s. i think. i had some left issues and some bad estimates. i have been slacking off and havent been shooting or any range parctice. but this whole week i have been hard at it. it was just time for me to get my butt in gear.. im going to make 2 shoots this weekend. MCH
Re: 2006 Competition scores Made that on Excel, Tony. I take a blank one with to each shoot and write the estimation down before I shoot, then I either step the target off or get ideas from other shooters. The Actual Distance isn't precise but its usually within a yard or two.
NYBUCK
Re: 2006 Competition scores Shot a 369 out of 400 yesterday at our local shoot. Not too bad but made some dumb mistakes.
MCH
Re: 2006 Competition scores Good shooting, NY. I made quite a few dumb mistakes Saturday, too. On a 30 target course, scoring 12's, I shot an even up 300. Not real bad but not real good either. I changed my windage 3 or 4 times during the day trying to get my bow sighted in. I dropped a five on one target.. My last time at this course I scored a 296, if I remember correctly. So at least I improved a little. But still, it wasn't my best. I did the same thing as last time. Probably shot 18 down on my first 10 targets and made it up on the next 20. One of these days, I'll get mentally prepared. I better before June 3rd or Tony will spank my butt... Tony
Re: 2006 Competition scores no spanking from this guy here .. im struggling right now. the shots are going off great, im holding great , but my ranging is pretty poor. i shot a shoot near Lucas Iowa. it was a super nice course and fun to shoot. but the shots were just a tad close for us Open shooters. being kind of close, did not however allow me to shoot as well as i should have. i shot 383 out of 400...just 10 , 8 , 5 scoring.. i shot ok at the start , but while they werent the farthest targets, they were deceptive in shade and dips and humps.. i shot a 5 on a raptor , that i thought was 34 yards. problem was it was only 29! i made a heck of a shot across water on a grizzly at 44 yards. i think i nailed all the turkeys with 10s. but then shot an 8 on a black bear at 32 yards that i thought was 28? im off to shoot Indianola this morning. i think im going to make a shot chart and see where im having problems. if i can see the yardage all the way to the target i get very close on yardage. my problem is when they introduce shade and slopes and humps.. Tony
Re: 2006 Competition scores i shot a great course in Indianola Iowa today. this course is really tough with all the long range shots and sever downhills. i shot good on the long targets, but a whole bunch of 8s( 13 ) and a couple of 5s in there also. 364 out of 400. the 8s were either slightly left or low. the 5s were due to 1 i couldnt see where to aim at all . black target in a dark hole and the second was a coyote at 34 yards downhill that i thought was 38.. this week will be pretty busy shooting with Ultratec1 getting ready for the 1st leg of The Heartland Triple Crown thats this upcoming weekend.. Tony
Re: 2006 Competition scores me and Ultratec1 have been working hard this week so far. we shot Happy Apple 3D on monday and then Panora 3D last night. im starting to get with the program . shots are going off good and we both shot very well last night. we counted 11s and i shot 10 up and Ultratec1 shot 9 up. wed night is going to be a shooting day off for me, but i will do some range practice after work.. i might just be working myself out of my slight slump im having. the Heartland Triple Crown starts this weekend in Omaha, Neb and i want to be as prepared as i can be. MCH
Re: 2006 Competition scores Just now getting around to posting my scores from May 13th.. I didn't shoot all that well. Although, I did shoot even up, I felt I should have shot better. The BS's are Bad Shots and the CS's are where I change my sights. Not sure why, but my bow just didn't feel "on" at the first. I was shooting lights out on the bales at 30,40 and 50 but once I started the course I just didn't feel right. Like always, I started out horrible. Misjudged my first target by 9 yards!! To my defense, it was across a creek, which is tough to start out on. Once I got past the mental block, I started nailing X's left and right. The majority of my tens were solid, near X cutters. To me, there are two kinds of tens: The "glad I got a ten"'s and the "should have been an X". I shot a lot of the "should have been an X" tens. Oh well, everyday is a learning experience. Paris is hosting an ASA Qualifier Saturday and Sunday. I think Hutchies is going to meet me in Hugo and we're gonna make it Sunday. I'm taking my hunting bow though. I'm just not confident enough with my yardage judging to believe I could compete in the Open class. But my shooting the Open class should help me shoot better in the Hunter Class. We'll find out I guess.
Tony
Re: 2006 Competition scores not confident in your yardage ? looks like you had them all nailed but 1 Kevin. i sure wish i was that consistant on my ranges. but im getting better. i have 3 shoots this long weekend. im shooting Omaha Neb. 1st Leg of the Heartland Triple Crown. maybe Montezuma on sunday and raccoon ridge on monday .. im trying to get better the only way i know how, shoot, shoot and shoot some more.. Kevn where do you get your range cards you have ? thats pretty cool and a great way of keeping track of your shoots... MCH
Re: 2006 Competition scores Tony, that's just an Excel spreadsheet. I print off a blank copy before every shoot and then before I shoot I write down the target, type of shot and my estimation. Sometimes I walk the target off to get the actual distance and sometimes I ask other shooters in my group what they're estimation was. I know most of the distances probably aren't correct but they're very close. If I were to take a range finder I'd probably find that my estimations would be more off than what they are. If ya want, I can upload the spreadsheet to my website and you can copy it. As for my yardage estimation, look at how many are out past 35 yards. Not many. I'm good at most targets under 35. I'm positive that if I were to enter a tournament where the majority of the targets were over 35, I would suck. That's why I'm not confident. Also, Tony, you've got to take into account that I shoot this range probably 8 times a year. Most of the shots are in my memory. I wish I could shoot more. Now that I've got two kids, its hard to slip outside for more than 30 minutes in the evening. It will be easier when my boy gets old enough to shoot with me, though. Tony
Re: 2006 Competition scores well i have to post this so that you guys just dont think i post only my good shoots. my last 2 shoots have been really bad. i shot the Heartland Triple Crown on saturday in Omaha Neb. i started out pretty good. then the 25 to 35 mph winds hit us. with a course thats pretty open and tough it made things even worse. i had just shot 4 11s in a row and a couple of 10 and then hit a jaguar at about 36 yards. the crosswind was so bad it blew my arrow under the target.. a complete miss. i handled it . but it did get to me a tad. next shot was a 5 in the same high wind . to make a long story short , i ended up qwith 2 zeros and four 5s. i was humbled quite a bit and made for a long ride home and a lot of thinking on what the heck happened. i shot 350 with ten 11s... top scores in open were around 380ish i believe. so sunday i went with Ultrtec1 to Montezuma Iowa for his shot at the 2nd leg of the IBA triple crown. i didnt shoot the first one so i was just there to have fun and shoot. this course is by far the tughest course i have ever seen. i shot it 2 years ago and it was a real pain even then. with 40 yard up hill shots at about a 45 degree angle and the downhills were even worse. there were so many dark targets in dark spots i took my lens out with about 15 targets to go. that made it better. but not by much. lets just say i shot my score was pretty poor. but i didnt miss any targets even in that wind and i only had seven 5s.. ultratec1 impressed again me with his ability to estimate range. i mean he just looks, for like 10 seconds and then sets his sight and shoots. he shot well but i beieve he just barely missed 10 12s.. if he had those i think he would have shot up on that brutal course. sure wish some of you could come experience this one. its a lot tougher than the ADA course we shoot for the okie gathering. so this morning im off to raccoon ridge to shoot a local shoot with a buddy form work. maybe i can salvage the weekend with a good shoot today. when you combine a tough course , windy , hot conditions that course becomes even tougher. i guess i need to practice in the wind shooting. im tired now, thanks for reading the novel here.. MCH
Re: 2006 Competition scores I shot an ASA Qualifier in Paris, TX yesterday. Hutchies went with me. We both shot OK, but both could've shot better. It was Hutchies' first shoot so he'll do nothing but get better. I shot a 294-4X. Not as good as I expected but those ASA offset X's are pretty tough. I ended up 8th out 51 shooters. The one thing I did wrong, is I went for too many X's. To start off the tourney, we had a 27 yard target. I went for the X and nailed it. So I thought, boy this is a breeze. Next target, a 32 yard buck, I went for it and pinwheeled it! Boy was this easy. Long story short, after those two X's, I promptly missed my next 10. It would never fail. I'd tell myself and the group, that I was going for the solid 10 shot then I would get up to the stake, glass it, and change my mind. Sure enough, I'd go for it and the majority of the time, I would miss short. Which we all know, is not where you want to miss on an ASA target. Anyway, about the 23rd target, I finally talked myself into shooting solid 10's when I wasn't sure of myself. I ended up 10'ing out. There's no doubt in my mind that given the same opportunity, I could shoot even up on a similar ASA course. Oh well, 8 out of 51 ain't too shabby. It leaves me room for improvement. Straight Shooter
Re: 2006 Competition scores Well, I finally made a tournament and it was in LA. LOL My brother gave me a bow he had won in a contest on Archery Talk, so I had to try it out after I sighted it in. The bow is heavy in weight and I'm not used to pulling 67#'s on a 30 target 3-D course, but I did manage to shoot six points up and take second place in the hunters class. Tony
Re: 2006 Competition scores well well well... guess what .....its NOT a good idea to NOT practice before a big shoot. i might have well taken a blindfold.. i started off good and then shot 3 5s in a row due to missing the yardage by on adverage of 5 to 6 yards on each target.. i had a woefull day estimating range, but i finished up strong. i learned a lot by shooting with a Hoyt staff shooter that provided many good tips for me to use. i have taken that advice and i have been working hard this week from sunday to today. i dont want to ever have another performance like in Atlantic again... i shot a poor 349 with 9 11s... Tony
Re: 2006 Competition scores B... you guys are tough in Okieland.. it just seems that i shoot very well there. i shot a local tourny today at Afton. while i didnt shoot super good. i was a lot closer to my yardages .. i ended up with a 365 out of 400. this local course has gotten a lot tougher . 33 yard turkeys and a lot of small targets.. some super ravine shots and a few dark tunnel shots. Jake has done a good job making it tougher each time i shoot it and thats what makes me keep coming back.. just about 2 yards hot on everything. i made a adjustment to my sight marks on monday when i shot and i think i went a little overboard. i will have to back it off a tad.. MCH
Re: 2006 Competition scores Just got back for the Archer's for Christ shoot in Paris, TX. Shot pretty good today. I've decided to put my target bow up for the year since I really need a new string on it and don't want to shell out the dough. So I took my hunting bow and shot Hunter class. I shot 26 up for the day with 15X's out of 30 targets. I tell you judging yardage is a lot easier when you don't have to go out past 40. I was about one inch from shooting all up but I ended up shooting two 8's for the day. One was a 22 yard downhill turkey and the other was a 25 yard buck(bad shot). Both shots were within 1/4 inch from the 10 line. I managed to get 3rd place out of around 50 shooters. First place shot a 330 with 15X's and second place shot 328 with 13X's. All in all, probably one of my best days on the range. Oh yeah, almost forgot. Got to meet the Texas team for Drury Outdoors Dream Season III. The new season airs the 27th and Steve and his wife will be on the show. Nice people. Their the only man/wife team on the show apparently. Pretty neat.
