billygoat
alright guys! Just put in for the WI turkey spring hunt. Zone 5, both the wife and I. Now I need pointers or a professional caller to come get these rascals in range (that or a well sighted in .243). How about it Chrud.... are you going to come call for me? Any takers let me know... and yes I'm serious (as a heart attack). I have never done this turkey thing, but everyone tells me it's a gas, so I figured I'd give it a try... just looking for a little help! Thanks all! Strut10
Re: I need a caller! [ QUOTE ] Depends on what you consider a professional ??? haha [/ QUOTE ] In the words of an old feller I met on a mountain in West Virginia, one time: "I guess a 'professional' is the guy with the youngest legs." 'Bout right.
Strut10
Re: I need a caller! Get yourself a call and some videos. Maybe look up someone with a bit of calling experience for some pointers. You have lots of time to practice up before season rolls around. Chrud
Re: I need a caller! I'd say sure Bill, but unfortunately, I highly doubt I'd get any time off for that from work or school. Sorry. Maybe if you shot a Mathews. What dates did you apply for? I never hunted that far south, so I don't know what I would say for you to expect. I know up here it isn't easy. There are a ton of birds, but the don't typically work with a guy much once the season starts. Definately get youself some turkey hunting DVDs...I like Realtree's All-Stars of Spring and HS Cuttin' and Struttin'. They'll help you a bit. Maybe check out HS's "So You Want to Be a Turkey Hunter" videos as well. You can expect to learn a lot about turkeys this spring though. You can use rifles? I did not know that. billygoat
Re: I need a caller! Lol, Matt- Mathews (cough, cough, cough) You can't use a rifle???? since when?
VtBowhunter
Re: I need a caller! I agree with these guys. Get a couple turkey videos (Primos Truth about turkey series is great) and then from that decide what calls you'll want. Then copy what they do as you watch them. I hope you were joking about the rifle. I don't know of any states that allow hunting for turkeys with rifles.
Chrud
Re: I need a caller! In the 2006 Spring Regs it says... "You may not hunt turkeys: By any means other than a shotgun or muzzle-loading shotgun fired from the shoulder, or a bow and arrow or crossbow." I think you can in some states, but not in Wisconsin. Born2Hunt
Re: I need a caller! All I can say is practice with some calls and attempt it yourself that first bird you call in will be your biggest reward ever. It is awesome! billygoat
Re: I need a caller! Lol, yes guys... I am joking about the "rifle" thing! I am well aware that hunting turkeys in WI with a rifle is illegal. I'm looking for a barrel for my 870 Remington as I type this!

Chrud
Re: I need a caller! [ QUOTE ] if i was amazingly goodlike chrud i would come and call for ya...lol [/ QUOTE ] LOL! Don't think I'm THAT good. I always had a ton of birds respond, but nothing that came in that close. I didn't start calling birds in until after I hunted with Realtree Pro-Staffer Steve Foate this past spring. I learned so much by just listening to him. I tried to duplicate just what he did...and it worked. My brother just didn't hold up his end of the deal (the shootin').
rockefeller66
Re: I need a caller! you are right it is a BLAST, but much harder then any TV show or movie makes it, once you get that first bird you're in trouble!!!!! As far as calling, I gotta call in these birds for my dad, then get me one, and help out my sister and brother!!!! sorry, Good Luck though! RyanH
Re: I need a caller! [ QUOTE ] LOL.. Bill you need RyanH that boy can just flat out Turkey hunt...... [/ QUOTE ] Luke thanks alot for the kind wwords! Bill Like everyone else has stated. Just Watch videos, and learn your calls. Once you have mastered them you just gotta learn when to call and when not to call! You can OVERCALL a bird and push them away instead of bring them in. If you get a chance, and you have the mens Channel, watch a show called GOBBLIN FEVER. Awesome awesome show. A couple of my friends run that show along with THE FEVER. They are great people that server our good LORD and do it on TV. In my books they produce the BEST turkey hunting shows. Good Luck, If you have any ?'s PM me. Ill help you out if I can. Good Luck! AdvantageTimberLou
Re: I need a caller! Billy, Welcome to the world of turkey hunting, its a great rush and an addiction. I would say get some calls and practice because learning to call them in yourself is the best part. I am good with a mouth call but I also like to have a slate and box call nearby as well. Most calls with some practice will make you sounds just as good as a turkey. Now go practice being a turkey!! LOL!!
kooter
Re: I need a caller! I would buy a box call and practice from now until the time you left. They are the easiest call to use. Good luck this spring

ladydiehard
Re: I need a caller! I hunted turkey this fall for the first time and loved it. I set up along a route that I know they travel...to and from a cornfield. I also bought me a H.S. box call and practiced with it for a few days beforehand. Switched my slug barrel out for a bird barrel on the ole 870 20 gauge and off I went. I was told turkeys don't respond to a call in the fall. This is not true. I heard them first and I called back. They answered me. Curiosity got the best of them and they came my way. I shot a nice hen. There weren't any toms in the group but it didn't matter in the fall. I'm now hoping for a shot at a tom this spring.
